The Columbus TcleKram. over whose destinies Edgar Howard presides, favors us with a kindly exhortation In maters relating to the Temple Fund. While appreciating the spirit In which we arc addressed, we are naturally curious to bo enlightened upon some points In connection with what Is said, that are not quite cleor to us. For Instance. M sayB: "Chancellor Andrews has plainly said that the day Is near at hand In which the public educational system will die unless supported by the private con tributions of the rich." When did Chancellor Andrews plain ly say this? 'Die" Is quite a compre hensive word. In this case it means utter extinction, and we hae neer heard of Chancellor Andrews salnn plainly anything that would leae any such Impression as that. In speaking further of Chancellor Andrews, the Tel egram says: "He holds up to our bojs and girl the Rockefeller gift, and by word and action Bays: 'Here Is a man whoso conduct Is worthy of emulation," while all the educated world knows that be hind the bars of the Nebraskh. peniten tiary there is no more persistent break er of the criminal laws than this same Rockefeller." Chancellor Andrews has never by word or action held up Mr. Rockefeller for emulation. The educated world may be wise in its knowledge, but we would like to know how long this same Rockefeller has been behind the bars of Nebraska penitentiary. In conclud ing the Telegrani says: "Leaving out of consideration at this time the question of the acceptance ot the Rockefeller monument by the uni versity authorities I mnv nlniwl with every student in that great school to be loyal to the chancellor in his personal capacity, but to fight manfully against every bod principle which may be ad authorJty. Men die young. Principles vanced, even when endorsed by such live long." The statement that we should be loyal to the chancellor in his personal capacity is good advice. But we are at a loss to know what bad jirinciple has been endorsed by him. and inas much as tie Telegrani is not explicit here wo can not even guess. "Men die young. Principles live long," is a pleasing little epigram to remember, although wo believe that the editor of t.ie Telegram has- lived longer than some of his principles. But anyhow he has a pleasing style of argument and it gives us pleasure to discuss me ters with him. Constderablo Interest has heen aroused in educational circles over the workings of the honor system, that is in force in many of our sister Insti tutions. In a humher of instances It has proved a failure. But at Prlnce- ton everything points to a successful end. Concerning the condition of af fairs at Princeton the Wisconsin Cardi nal makes the following comment: "The honor system as enforced at Princeton seems to bo something moie than a name. The student senti ment Is quite different there than In most universities, and is of the sort required to make a success of that system. Hero at Wisconsin students are probably neither more nor less scrupulous In entire observance of the pioprietles of examination week than are students in the average American university, but If the following clipping from the Princeton paper ac curately represents student sentiment at Nassau, they have approached an Ideal which as yet seems to us a great way off. After having used the honor system for twelve years, this is what they think of cribbing and cribbers: " 'To catch a Princeton man cribbing is as mm h of a sensation in this sec tion of New Jersey as would be the successful looting of the sub-treasury vaults In New York. It Is not only a violation of college tradition. It is a violation of a code of morals, and places the violators outside the pale oi association with their fellows. A convicted cilbber Is ostracised even by the college janitors.' " A three-cornered scrap that Is at tracting attention is now being carried on by Iowa. Minnesota and Wiscon sin. The two former have fault to find with the latter in that she Is un sportsmanlike and breaks contracts without any reason. The Wisconsin manager on tne contrary states that VJiseoiiHln npvor -broke either with Jowa or Minnesota and that he didn't care to take a team up to Minnesota on account of the bad treatment It al ways receives there. Minnesota asks tne Wisconsin manager to cite a single instance when a Wisconsin athletic team was treated In an ungontlemanly way at ner nands. In reply to tin statement made that no contract with Minnesota for a basket ball game was entered into by Wisconsin, the Goph ers assert that such a contract was made. This Is the point at which the whole matter rests, and although we have no right to venture an opinion in legard to the correctness of either sid. yet we believe it will be best for col lege athletics when such unpleasant stilfes between rival institutions tan be eliminated. O Nebiaska and MlSourl Uioveisities are working hard for Temple build ings, where the various Christian as sociations may be quartered. The money must bo raised by subscription as the states can not make appropria tions for such buildings.- Nebraska has her building assured. Missouri has made a good start, while Iowa State Colloge had bids on hand for her build ing of like character. Meanwhile Drake must worry (?) along with what she's got. Drak'e Delphic.
