Editorial Remarks
With chances for three debates on
hand our debaters will be kept very
busy for the next month or so. Natur
ally tho whole University public Is
Interested In the preparations that arc
being mado for the forthcoming con
tests, aa so many of our Interests are
at stake. When the Kansas team comes
here to dobate, thcro will certainly be
a full house present -to witness tho
contest. It Is felt that Kansas will
make the greatest effort this year that
she has ever made, as she has already
sufforod threo successive defeats at our
hands, and would like to turn the tide.
In Washington our men will meel a
now and untried foe. The only chance
that Nebraska has had to meet her at
all has been in baseball. Tho team that
meets her will have to show ability
of an unusual degree. In these two
and in Iowa is a trio that makes a
strong combination. If arrangements
are made with Iowa, then it will Indeed
bo apparent that our debaters have a
task before them. However, we can be
assured that Nebraska will not under
take more than Bhe Is sure that she
can carry out.

Graft aniLextravagance are evils that
will prove disastrous to any business,
and that they should have room for op
eration In our athletic matters is to be
regretted. The students and faculty
have put forth strenuous eqorts in
supporting football and any knowledge
that their intentions did not fulfill their
purposes would bo unbearable to them.
vVe havo hesitated to say that graft ex
ists in athletics, but the fact Is ap
parent. Someone Is taking advantage
of conditions and circumstances to ben
efit himself. Members of tho athletic
board assort that they realize that It
takes place, bu that they can not stop-
It. Such being tho case they should
combine their forces and examine Into
matters closely and see where they can
save. Tho workings of tho board should
be known by each member. If not, Its
function is not fulfilled..
It is plain that we need a more thor
ough and careful system of running
athletics. This Is made plain by the
fact that graft exists and extravagances
occur. Wo are now $500 behind. By
June 1st the deficit will have grown
to $1,000 If present estimates are cor
rect. This raonev must be paid some
time, and the incurrence of additional
deficits guarded against. The Biipport
that can bo, given football here in Lin
coln has wellnlgh reached Its limit,
hence measures of some kind must be
taken to restore the proper balance
Cutting down expenses Is tho most log
ical means especially tho elimination
of unnecessary expenses.
But a special' set must be mado on
graft, especially 4n connection with
athletics. Inasmuch aa, it tends to
throttle any kind of. business with
which It Is connected It must be guarded
agnlnBt. A student supports athletics
because of his devotion to his Institu
tion, and his worthy alms should not
be taken advantage of. And last of all,
wo bollovo that If strenuous efforts are
made to weed out all graft and extrava
gances then athletics here will be put
on a more stable foundation financially.
FIX FOR THE DEBATERS
Trophy Room Turned Into
Seminary by University.

The trophy room has been trans
formed into a Bominary room for tho
U80 of the interstate squad. Last year
Librarian Wyer grantejl tho squad the
use of a room in Library ball, but this
haB been taken this year, and In con
Bequenco the present quarters have
been provided. In It the University
has put long tables at which fifteen
members of the squad have room for
work and for round table dlBcussion
during the course of investigation.
Through the kindness of Superin
tendent Fee lights, four In number,
havo been supplied. The squ&.d cer
tainly has comfortable quarters for
r-nrrying on Its work, with the trophies
of flvo successive victories In two
years looking down upon thorn. The
squad Is meeting dally.
The tentative arrangements for tho
prospective debate that Iowa desires of
ub. stand about as they did In yester
day's report. Iowa's delays of a month
ind a day In deciding as to wihere she
preferred the debate to be held, and
whether or not she would give Ne
braska a return battle next year, has
added to Nebraska's difficulty in re
arranging at this late time matters al
ready fixed for tho regular debates of
the year. Iowa's refusal to bargain
for anything more than n one year
compact is taken to mean that she 's
desirouB of using Nebraska to tide over
tho break caused by tho withdrawal of
Wisconsin.
That fact, however, will not Influ
ence Nebraska one way or the other
if sho can re-arrange at this late date
details for the other debates.
The Washington-Nebraska debate,
which will take place at St. Louis the
second week In May, 1b clearly going to
be a battle as Interesting as will be the
Kansas fight here on the home grounds.
The St. Louis contest will, according
to- the Instructions which Washington
has sent on for the judges, be fought
straight on Nebraska lines.
The Kansas squad meets with a
member of tho faculty three times a
week. Kansas prefers April 22d for
the debate in Lincoln. It will be held
either the 22d or the 29th. B. R. Buck
ner, an old aYid tried friend of Kansas,
prophesies that the crowd that night
will be hanging on to tho rafters of
Memorial hall. Kansas will debut a
Missouri April 15th at Lawrence, and
the Colorado at Boulder early in May.
Michigan is making big preparations
for her debate with Northwestern to
sottlo tho Central Debating League
championship. Michigan will use the
same threo men that bested Minnesota
a month ago. The debate will -take
place in Chicago early In April. Tho
Compulsory Incorporation of Ijibor
Unions will be debated. Northwestern
has already beaten Chicago.
