Tho Wrinkle, a literary magazine published by Btudents of Ann Arbor University, comes to our table. Among tho editors wo noto tho name of George P. Shidler, '03. The magazine 1b full of vim and lifo and fully carries out tho purpoeo at which it aims. Tho following communication has been roceived from John White, for merly professor in chemistry and who Ib now at tho head of tho chemistry department at the Rose Polytechnic in stitute at Terra Haute, Ind. Although it seems that concern for tho immedi ate welfare of athletics here will be romoved, yet we publish the letter as coming from a former member of our faculty and a friend of our institution: Editor of The Nebraskan: It Ib with the greatest regret that I observe in one of your recent issues that the board of regents of tho Uni versity of Nebraska has, by its action in regard to the location of tho new Physics building, as well as by the new ruling in regard to military drill. Btruck, what appears to mo, a death blow to athletics in that institution. As one long connected with the univer sity, and alBO to some extent with ath letic affairs thero, I feel impelled to say a few words voicing my disap pointment over the outcome. I in no wise wish to bo considered as among those if thero be any such who regard athletics as of interest paramount to that of science, and If it were merely a question of no athletics or no physics building, I should not hesitate athletics would have to go. But are tho regents confronted by such" a dilemma? Is It not possible to main tain both, without impairment to either? I think so. I have known enough of the history of athletics in tho University to be in a position to say that, without ques tion, if the athletic field Is moved from the campus at thlB time, it means death to tho cause; an athletic field muBt bo In close proximity toThe uni versity, els it makes it nearly Im possible for the candidates for the va rlouB teams to practice, and it kills all interest in athletics among the student body, -without which there can be nothing done in the athletic lino Of course tho big games might be JuBt as well attended, but what Is needed above that Is student attendance and student Interest In tho practice Itself Each student ought to know Just what Men and every member of the teair can do and either be able to spur hlir on to greater offort or, by encouraginr him and showing a proper appreciation ofhim, keep him up to his standard. Athletics has a proper place in the university life, and should bo encour aged under proper control. I hope very much that some sort of a compromise can be effected wherobj Ihe'best interests of both tho Physic .department and of athletics may bt attained without clashing.
