The baseball men took advantage of tbo weather yesterday and turned out to the number of about forty. If this weather only keeps up for a couple of weeks longer the men will bo in good condition to settle down to good hard work when spring at last comes. A number of last year's team are back and will be prepared to hold their Jobs against any new comers. Boltzcr, Town send and Morse, of the pitching staff, are out. Bender is in school but haB de cided to do track work instead of hold ing the backstop position for another peafaon. Steen is showing up In One form nnd will doubtless have no trouble In winning his placo at third. Manager Bell received a telegram from the Notre Damo manager on last Monday, which set the date of the game with that institution for May 3d. On the 1st we play Chicago, the 2d is open, Knox and Lombard cross bats with us on the 4th and 5th. The schedule 1ioh been considerably strengthened by the addition of Notre Dame, as the Catho lics specialize in baseball and have beaten us with considerable regularity heretofoie. The baseball team has gotten down to worK. and they intend to give Wis consin a warm iccoptlon next week. The northern trip disclosed the fact that while our team work was up to the requirements, there was a sad ina bility to shoot goals accurately. Hagen sick is the onlj man on the team who can make his basket within any place near the proper number of times, and to remedy this defect. Dr. CJapp has ananged for certain hours when every member on the team shall do nothing but put the ball In the elusive basket. A game with the Omaha Y. M. C. A. for Friday night was considered, but it was finally decided not to play it. but save the men for the big contest with Wisconsin a week from that night. The championship contest between tho Freshmen and Sophomore basket ball teams is mousing a great deal of enthusiasm, and all indications point to a big crowd out lor the game. The Freshmen seem to have considerably tho better chance to win. but many think that the Sophs will give them a hard rub. as they won the champion ship fiom tho present Senior team last year. Three of tho last year Fresh man team are back, and Winchester nnd KImmell. two Lincoln high school men, take the other places. Tho game can not bo played this week on ac count of the giils' tournament, and un less played next Monday will have to be postponed unttl sometime in March. Dr. Clapp has divided the track men into several divisions in order to fa cilitate, coaching. The sprinters and broad Jumjers will meet him on Mon days from 4 to 4:30, tho high, jumpers and distance runners are to come out on Monday from 4:30 to 5, and on Wed nesday from 4 to 4:30; the hurdlers train from 4:30 to 5 on Wednesday, the heavyweight men from 2:30 to 3 on Saturday, and the pole vaulters from 3 to 3:30 on tho same day. While out rabbit hunting Sat urday bhe'was accidentally shot In tho side by a friend In whose company she was. The doctois have been unable to find the bullet, and while holding out hopes for recovery regard her condi tion as very serious. Miss Johnson has many friends in tho University who will bo deeply concerned to hear of her serious condition and will unite in the earnest hope that her life may bo spared.
