Last week Professor Bessey read n
paper before the Nebraska Acadoray of
Scienco on "The Fuel Value of the
'Cottonwood," In which he showed that
more heat may be grown on a given
tract of ground in a given time by
planting cottoriwood trees than by the
use of any other species. This Is due
to the much more rapid growth of the
cottonwood. which much more than
balances its low fuel value when meas
ured by the cord. While a givjn bulk
of cottonwood has only about one-half
tho fuel value of hickory, the former
grows so much "more rapidly Hint It
yields full yeight times as rauclr heat
in twenty years of giowtlr.
