Association of Collegiate Alumnae
Offers Scholarship.
University people may be Interested
In the European fellowship offered by
the Assorlatlon of Collegiate Alumnae,
and to this end we print their circular,
which explains itself:
The Association of Collegiate Alum
nae is desirous of encouraging the pur
suit of advanced courses of study
nmong women graduates of colleges. It
therefore proposes to devote' live hun
dred dollars every year toward paying
the expenses of some young woman
who wishes to carry on her studies In
a foielgn country. Application for this
fellowship will be received by any
member of the committee having it in
charge. The candidates must bo grad
uates of colleges belonging to the as
sociation, and applications for the year
1904-1005 must be handed in before
February 1. 1904. The fellowship will
be awarded only to candidates who
give promise of distinction in the sub
jects to which they devote themselves.
It will be the aim of the committee
to appoint the candidate who Is best
fitted for the position through original
gifts, previous training, energy, power
of endurance and health. To this end
they will receive applications In writ
ing fiom eligible candidates, who will
present, as dearly as possible, their
clalmb to the fellowship. A competi
tive examination will not be held, but
the bestowal of the fellowship will be
based upon evidence of the candidate's
ability, and of her prospect of success
in her chosen lino of study. Such evi
dence will naturally consist of (a) her
college diploma; (b) testimonials as
to superior" ability and high character
from her professors and other quali
fied judges: (c) satisfactory evidence
of thoroughly good health; (d) a
statement of the work in which she
proroses to engage subsequently; (e)
last, and of chief importance, examples
of her scientific or literary work In the
form of papers or articles, or accounts
of scientific Investigations which she
has carried1 out. The fellowship will
not usually be granted to those who
aio Intending to take up the practice
of any of the threo learned professions,
though such are not formally excluded
from the competition; it will rather be
bestowed upon those who are looking
forward to positions as professors and
teachers and to literary and scientific
vocations. The fellowship will in gen
eral be held for one year; but In nn
unusually promising case the term
may bo extended at the discretion of
the committee.

from a letter from Watel F. Meier. U',
who Is teaching at South Bend, Wash
ington. "I like the progressivenes of the
west, but not the rains. At South Bend
it rained ninety Inches last year, and
everything bids fnir for another record
of the same sort. I am sixteen miles,
from the Pacific, but I haven't seen the
ocean-yet. ...
"I ho po tho prospects are bright for
Nebraska in debate this year. They
all must be thrashed again not only
the old ones, except Colorado, but also
tho new opponents that may appear.
The record must go on the same."
