Preliminary to entering into the body of his lecture Professor Barber explained the three great periods of Roman hiBtory, which are the "Kingly period." dating from the beginning of the city to 510 B. C; the "Republic" 510-27 B. C. and the "Imperial," 27 B. C to the fall nf Rome in 473. The Roman Forum, he said, was lo cated at the base of the Captollne hill, ard extended from southeast to north west. Books describing its position have given rite to fonfupion In speaking of its north and south ends. .In 1870 exca vations were begun In and about the Forum, and it was necessaiy to dig down through a number of successive pavements before the native ground vj" ri ached. Among the places of historical Inter est thown was the Comitlum. where the ailstod'ats met, while tho people as sembled in the Foium. Between them was (he tostia. so mat tne speaucr could turn and address whichever party ho (hope Cacear caused the rostia to be torn down, thus removing a mark of distinction distasteful to many. Views weie shown of the Temple of Concord, where Ciceio delivered the fourth of his Catalinarians. of the Tem ple of Saturn, the Bassilica of Julia, the Temple of Vespasian and the arch of Septimus Severus, which was erected in 203 A. D., in honor of Septimus Se verus arc! liia two sons. The Church of San Hadriana was shown, as stand ing on the foundation of the old Sen ate House. A view of the Sqnate House In 1G50 shows the ruin as being fifteen feet above Its present level. The north east corner and other parts of the Tab ulailum weie pointed out, showing the heaps of rubbish and soil before exca vation. A mile and a half distant rises the dome of St. Peter's on tho Capto line Hill. The Temple of Antoninus and Faustina, which the emperor built in honor of his wife Faustina was also shown. One interesting view was the exten sion of tho old Via Sacra along which the Roman priests led the sacrificial processions up the Captollne Hill. The staircase Is shown that led down to the Mamertine prison. Cicero stood on this staircase when the conspirators were put to death, and turning to the multi tude, he said: "Vixerunt," They have lived. Among other structures shown were the Temple of Castor and Pollux, Che three arches of the Temple of Justice of Constantlne, the front of the Temple of Saturn, in the basement of which the national treasury was located from which Caesar stole gold coins and put baek bronze ones instead, the Rostra and the Mlllarlum the golden mile from which all roads were measured and which was covered with stucco and glided, the Temple of Romulus, son of Baxicntus, the rival of Constantino and the emperor's palaces. Professor Barber gave views of most of these buildings, taken at different joints and showing different parts and relative situations in connection with other structures. Dalian Program.
