In a recont iBBiie of the Minneapolis
Journal appeared a half-tono of Dr.
Howard, formerly connected with the
Iitln department here and now at the
head of the Latin department of the
University of South Dakota, which was
accompanied hy the following article:
"Joseph Henry Howard, who suc
ceeds Professor Merchant as professor
of Latin at the University of South
Dakota, received his A. B. degree In
the University of Indiana In 1888, and
In 1890 was granted his A. M. degree.
In 1899 he was honored with a Ph. D.
from Lcland Stanford university. For
seven years he was assistant professor
In Latin In the University of Indiana,
and from 1301 to 1903 was connected
with the University of Nebraska, He
studied a year at Johns Hopkins and
also a year at Chicago university."
Mr. Walter K. Long, a former gradu
ate of this University, and now a stu
dent at the Northwestern "Medical
school of Chicago has been heard from.
He reports that he likes his work very
much and says all his University work
here was given full credit. He Is giv
ing the nurses In Wesley hospital a
course In general chemistry and is also
assisting Dr. Long'B first year class a
few hours every week. Ho also Bays
that thGre are quite a number Nebras
ka men registered In the Northwestern
University, among thom being Rowe,
Rain, Brooks, Leslie, Sims, B. Doano,
O. Hummell and J. P. Barry.
A letter has been received by the
Y. M. C. A. from Kenneth E. Riley, a
student of this University two years f
ago, who is now attending tho Univer
sity of Washington. On the envelope
ho Inscribed the Washington Univer
sity yell, which runs like this.
"U of W! Hiah! Hiah!
U of W! Slab! Siah!
Skookum! Skookum!
Washington!"
Word has been received that George
Shldler, '03, who Is now attending the
law school at tho University of Mich
igan, has received one of the greatest
honors that can be granted v6 a Fresh
man in that Institution, having ben
chosen ono of the committee to ar
range wltji tho faculty for the course
of lectures.
C. A. Rose, '03, now chemist In the
Argo smelter, Denver, Colo., was mar
ried last Saturday at Kearney. The
brldo was Miss Florence Hollowell, who
is also a graduate from this University.
She graduated In '02.
Frank A. Phllbrlck, '97, who took his
master'B degree In '99, and his doctor's
degree at Harvard In 1902, Is noyv In
London a work on the subject of "The
relations between the United States and
Cuba."
Mr. John Kind, who is now a fellow
In tho Columbian University, has been
asked by Mr. Carl Schurz to aid him
in preparing his memoirs. -Mr. Kind
can do this and still continue His work.

as the date for tho Pershing Rlflo Hop,
which will be held at the Lincoln hotel.

Tho number of girls at the PI Phi
house will be Increased by two next

Thursday evening, after his presenta
tion of "The New Dominion," Mr.
Clay Clement was entertained by the
Phi Kappa Psi's at their chapter house.
Mr. Clement was a member of the Il
linois Beta chapter of Phi Kappa Psi
in the 70's.
At the last meeting of tho Cadet Of
ficers club Harry Parker was chqsen
chairman of the officers hop comniittee.

About thirty-five couples enjoyed the
dancing. Walt's orchestra furnished
the music and refreshments were
served between times. Mr. and Mrs.
Howard Kirkpatrick were chaperones.
