Wadell. one of the foremost bridge en gineers of this country and author of "Do Pontlbus." That this gentleman is amply quali fied to entertain as well as instruct the following excerpt from the preface of this work, will show. Anent the ti tle ho says: "Probably the first point in connection with this book which the reader will tlnd it criticise is ita pe culiar title." "Each will probably remark. 'Why revert lo the Latin language? Is not English good enough?' certainly It Is; but the author had a second reason for using the Latin, which he will proceed to explain, as the said captious reader will not be satisfied without some ex planation. "For five consecutive years of his early life the author devoted more than half of his working time to the study of the Latin language, and this is the first opportunity which has occurred during the twenty-two years of his professional career to put the knowl edge ro obtained to any practical use. Moreover, he fears tnat even if he be so fortunate as to be able to practice his profession another twenty-two years no other ocaslon will ocur to use it, so he feels the necessity for grasp ing tliis unique opportunity of a life time. "Captious reader, are you now satis fled?" H. R. Edwards read a paper on the Railroad Spiral or Transition curve at the Inst meeting of the gnglneerlng so ciety. During the past year ..u Ed wards has been employed on railroad work near Los Angeles, Cal., where ho used the Southern Pacific spiral. He explained the purpose of the spiral. Us "growing Importance as train speeds Increase and track conditions Improve and the theory of several of the most Important forms. Without entering upon the derivation of the complicated mathematical equations to which the curve conforms he explained its prac tical construction in a few interesting paragraphs. The paper was well arranged, excel lently written and .showed a thorough grapp of the technical and practical sides of the subject. . The convocation period was taken up yesterday by the chorus and the audi ence uniting in singing college songs. The singing was led by Mrs. Raymond, who announced that this was the first of a series of chances that all would have to show their college spirit and enthusiasm by singing college songs. The following sougs were then sung: "Here's to Good Old Unl." "Listen to My Tale of Woe." "Swing Together," and by request, "Juanlta." The "Swing Together" Is a boating song and whA'n singing the chorus a rhythmical sway ing of the body In time. to the music makes it very effective. Although the volumo of the music was not so great as it might have been, the lact that very little of this kind of thing has eer been clone here Is probably the cause. The students do not know the songs. When they have learned them and have gotten so they tan turn themselves loose then wc may expect volume and often all tnat is what is most desired In college songs. Mrs. Raymond inspires enthusiasm and with her as leader great things along this lino of Improvement may be ex pected. The chorus Is growing, but there Is still a lack of men. It has Improved greatly since Its first appearance in chapel some four weeks ago.
