fled with the outcome of last Monday's
contest they Intend pushing the Issue
further, holding as their view that no
Freshman class should bo allowed to
administer Its affairs unopposed. It
Is qulto likely, however, that the
Freshman meeting for the election of
officers next Monday will not ho dis
turbed, but whatever tho Sophomores
do AvllI probably be of a local nature.
The Freshmen will have reason to con

testing in athletic sports is a sufficient

the scheme shows cleverness and at
tho same time shrewd calculation.
Somo system of raising money for the
college settlement had to be devised,
and In order not to Interfere with any
of tho plans that already exist and
havo been put into execution, it was
necessary that something new and sen
satlonnl be arranged, In order to at
tract the Interest and gain the support
of University people and the general
public. The committee In charge of
affairs are conducting matters in tlu
right way and are pushing the enter
prise vigorously, with every prospect

A second request for metallurgists

fice and at the headquarters of tho
chemistry department. Twenty-four
men are wanted, graduates preferred.
The request comes from tho Harbison
Walker Refractory Co., of Pittsburg.

The University treasurer reports that
tho sum of $1,600 will bo added this
year to the library fund as a result
of tjie ono doHdji- charged to each stu
dent not paying some Kind of a labor
atory fee, as a library lee.
For some time theio has been a
strong feeling among many members
of the faculty that somo plan should
bo devised by means of which the de
partmental libraries could be made
stronger. The great need was for du
plicates of the volumes most In de
mand and for volumes to replace those
too badly worn for further service.
The fund at Ihe disposal of the library
authorities was not sufficient to meet
the need. In several departments col
lections were taken In classes to make
certain purchases. Finally at a meet
ing of tho committee on fees the mat
ter was taken -up and Mr. Wyer was
consulted as to tho advisability of levy
ing a small sum upon tho students not
paying laboratory fees. Ho considered
it an excellent move, which would re
sult In great good to the students them
selves. The result of. tho trial has been
most satisfactory.
Somo years ago each of tho de
partments decided upon tho fees thought
necessary to bo charged in its own
domain. The results were submitted
to the faculty and their recommenda
tion sentto tho board of regents which
acted uno themliowever, tho growth
of the univeTfiltynas been so rapid and
the necessity for the formation of new
departments and schools requiring lab
oratory work so pressing that a spe
cial committee, was appointed by the
regonta to take charge of tho fixing
of fees for the entire Institution. The
regents agreed to -act on the decision
