Chancellor Andrews occupied the convocation period yesterday with nn add ess setting forth the advantages of attending chapel. lie thought Hint none would protest the proposition that the students of the University should look for culture Many who think only of their own specialty make a terri ble mistake in thinking of that alone. On the whole general culture is better than paitial cultuie. It is bettor to lie in a large liberal way than to he merely a doctor or a literary person who knows little of anything outside of hfs own profession. In this way the convocation exercises enter in, and in institutions where none are held the lack Is Indeed noticeable. There are several advantages In at tending convocation. Each man or wo man should Yegnrd it ns an opportuni ty for (omlng into contact with others and for lifting the soul to God. They are helped by being there. In thinking of the true, the beautiful and the good. The- lesson learned here is finer than matter or anything connected with his tory or literature. Each one should come and think of Ood and hear the ward from the Holy Writ Many think that religion is now hero. The notion that man can realize himself without religion Is a great mistake. i Students by coming to convocation may acqjlre a power of execution and annreclatlon of music. This alone is worth something. Furthermore the Scriptures arc read, and there Is no question among intelligent people but that it is best to become ns familiar as possible with the thought of the Old and the New Testament. Kitty years ago Greek and Roman Literature was jtudled extensively, but today they are studied In a nTurrrirss-rlegree- -A little study of Greek and Latin gives a great Insight Into ancient history and the Bible. Comparatively few now get the benefit of the study of Greek or Latin, and these chapel meetings give an op portunity to see how men worshiped before the time or Christ. This oppor tunity of looking back through infinite ages Is a great deal better than none at all. The Bible is the prlme literature of the English language. There are in dividual passages absolutely incompar able. There is no consolation for let ting such an opportunity for a knowl edge of literature slip hy. If Shakes peare was read, studeyrts should come ajul hear it read, but an opportunity is glvenfor Tieat'tnEEomcthintj-bettor than Shakespeare. One "67 the strong est arguments In favor of classical stu dies is that with them are connected the greatest works of literature. The best literature is tilled, with Sculptural references, and a person can not go far ,.-itiwuit iirwlpistuivdintr these icfer- eni es. Matters of moment pertaining to events dally- occurring are treated and analyzed by speakers at convocation. These discussions furnish a good sub stitute for the dally papers, which it takes a good deal of time to read. Al ready this seraeBtor there have been two or throe talks given that were worth more to each student than the money he pays the University for the whole year. -It would bo vastly groater. llcher and .leasanter if people made use of con vocation, and college, spirit would bo engendered. If we could all come to gether and see how numerous wo aroT the effect would be beneficial. In uni versities where no "public exercises of this Kind are held there la no vision Lt the Institution. Go to their build ings and class rooms and you cau see a great deal, but there Is no vision that would give an insight into all. the work.
