Editor of The Nebraakan: Class books and class social func tions are two University concerns which are worthy of considerable at tention from the students. It has, for some time, been recognized that these two institutions have been Improperly managed. Small steps are, however, taken towards any reform. "Money-making" is the epithet gen erally applied to these University af faire. It is a well-known fact that those given the most important places as chairmen' or as editors often obtain their position through some factional influence. -Frequently such persons are entirely disinterested as far as the interests of their class are concerned. It Is a fact that persons who have been honored with Important places on the Btaffs of class books of the past, have not been members of classes of whose alleged publications they were the publishers. In view of facts- like these, It Is not difficult to account for the unsatisfactory character of some publications. When a reform is proposed, It is often suggested that we are, like zeal ous but helpless reformers In other fields, confronted by conditions which can not well be remedied. It Is cer tainly a melancholy Btate of affairs If 150 men and women of a Junior or a senior class in the University of Ne braska can not as a class organization successfully publish a class book or give an enjoyable and proper class social function. Individual contribu tions by members should bo made to meet expenses, and profits Bhould be held by the class as a whole. The fault Ilea ultimately with the class organizations. These, at present, show a dearth, of class as well as of college spirit; likewise a want of ap preciation of the Importance of class organizations In promoting the valu able pleasantries of college Ufa Class organizations are especially suited to bring together In close contact, on pleasant occasions, the members of our hard working, zealous, friendly college body, and thus add, many links to the student's chain of his happiest and best University experiences. Recent class functions have been considerably at variance with any such an Idea. The only means of Identifying a recent party In the armory as a sophomore class party waB the bom bardment with eggs by the freshmen. Any one who cared to adVanco the price of a ticket was welc6me. The Junior reception to the Benloro this year was certainly a disappoint ment to members of both classes and almost pathetically out of keeping with the general spirit and character of those given by preceding classes. A number of couples strolled over to the armory last Saturday evening and danced for about two hours. By affairs of this kind we are not building up strong class organizations, full of friendly and enthusiastic mem bers glad to devote time to class and University enterprises which may be a credit to their class and school, and a source of pleasure and profit to them selves. A class organization makes a wretched choice when it selects to man age Its enterprises persona whose pa triotlsm Is embodied solely In a zeal for a "rake-off." Those should be chosen who, In the most cases at leaBt, find a sufficient reward in the pleasure and profit not measured In money, which they find In such work. If our Bchool be so devoid of college spirit that there are no persons whose Interest In the different pnases oi uni versity life Is sufficient to induce them to take a hand In the proper manage ment of University affairs, let Improp erly conducted concerns bo abolished. But any Buch step is hardly necessary. There are certainly Borne who should take a more, active Interest in Univer sity affairs to make improvements wherever they are needed. F. K. N. As a girl, I protest that they would not be bo easily led In in stances where more weighty matters than simply personal selection were at stake. It is allowable and apropos to criticize the management of Univer sity politics, but in this connection it seems unjust to criticize woman's suf frage In general. The fact that women have opinions and hold to them firmly mUBt be admitted, and If the candi dates for board election represented some principle or political Issue, It would be Been that the girls of the Uni versity would vote with as much inde pendence and perhaps wltn less preju dice than the men now do. Against the inference that women would allow themselves to be easily Influenced when voting on matters of Importance, I pro test. UNIVER8ITY GIRL.
