'College Spirit."
(Continued from page 1.)
How Cin It bo Aroused?
Every one seemed to have definite
ideas as to whether there was a lack
of spirit or not, but few who thought
it was lacking, could dovlso a BCheme
to better the condition. One of the
professors would "reduce the amount
of work that falls upon the faculty aB
well as tho students. The faculty," he
said, "are so busy that they have not
time to attend convocation, say noth
ing about debates and games. I think
that if a faculty athletic club were
organized it would help out college
spirit In tho University because that
would at once enlist the Interest of the
faculty In athletics. At Leland Stan
ford there Ib such an organization and
oven Dr. Jordon gets out on tho fiold
and plays. Tho faculty thoro maintain
a baseball team that frequently beats
the Junior and senior teams. When 1
was thoro the faculty baseball games
were counted among the moat interest
ing occasions of tho year."
Another professor, in discussing the
question, said: "The students ought to
got together oftener. The elective sys
tem is bad In that It does not distin
guish between tho classes. Students
are thrown upon themselves and so
lose interest in everything but their
own individual work. Dormitory life
would bo a great help, If it would be
introduced."
Several students were also of the
opinion that students are too much
separated by the elective system and
therefore about the only remedy that
could bo applied would be some Bcheme
for bringing the students more closely
together.
Taking advantage of the lato demon
stration of the lack of college spirit In
the failure of tho student body to at
tend the Glee Club concert, a member
of tho club was interviewed. Ho said:
"Speaking of college spirit, we re
call vividly to mind tho expressions of
disgust made by members of the Glee
Club after their first concert given at
the University. It Is not surprising
that they should have been discouraged
with the support which was glveu
them. The studontB are not alone to
blame, but the faculty are entirely to
bo called Into disrepute, along this
line, for it has been found that only by
roason of other engagements of long
standing that a largo number of tho
faculty were not present. At any rate
one faculty member was present.
The students, of course, havo so
many things to take their time and
attention that it Is not surprising that
they fail to go to some of tho best at
tractions. If peradvonturo tho club
should again sing before school closes
this spring, the students would have a
good chance to show their estimation
one way or the other of a club. It
seems rather peculiar, and yet it is a
fact, that the club has more encourage
ment from outside towns than from
tho University proper. Tho intention
of the club Is to show their value to
tho University either this spring xr
next fall by making an extonsivo trip
for advertising purposes. As tho club
alms to pay expenses rather than to
make money, the University can afford
to encourage It tho same way as It
does athletics and debating. Time will
be needed probably for education along
this line, but the time must come."
These opinions probably fairly repre
sent the sentiment of University peo
ple on the subject under discussion.
Prom the whole, tho following con
clusion seems warranted: There is a
lack of college spirit in tho University,
at least a lack in expressing it, whicli
I can be seen at various functions. The

trouble lies in too close application to
hooks and tho fact that the elective
