Y., Fob. 12. 1903. Dear NobraBkan Unlike the other large coIIprph of thp East, Cornell is not located within or npar a large metropolis bit lies an if it wpre apart from the rest of the bnny world- a democratic center of learning by Itself. A more beautiful, picturesque site for a college could not be imagined than where Cornell now rests. Situated In the hilly region of the south central part of New York state, in the fertile Cayuga valley, about four hours' ride south of Buffalo, is the quiet, typical college town of Ithaca and Gfbrnell University Like the University of Kansas, the campus is located on a hill, which overlooks the town and the beautiful, clear Lake Cayuga, which has made Cornell famous with her crews. The campus is the most beau tiful that any college in the country possesses. It covers a large area of land, and in the summer time when all the buildings are covered with ivy, together with the beautiful walks and drives, it presents a fine appearance. Numerous little lakes and brooks and deep gorges add to the natural beauty of the campus. It would be impossi ble for one not to fall in love with stub a garden spot and with such pic turesque scenery as Cornell offer. X In keeping with what nature has bestowed upon Cornell, the student body seems to absorb the spirit of the place and are welded together In the common welfare of Cornell. Other large Eastern (ollegcs possess a good deal of Eastern snobbishness and as sociate ideas Cornell has always up held democratic ideas, and everyone is a "good fellow." College spirit and the loyalty of all Cornellians to their alma mater is something remarkable and is the first thing that a new comer notices here. The welfare of the col lege ranks first In everything, class enthusiasm Is next emphasized, and then come other forms of college life. 0 ft -fkiilMJkJ m tiv: wrz Mt EnDEDLATEi' BONBONS Sold only by Harley :: X 'C t $ S 31S 1 t $ 1 $ 1 S114 t I i This fall during the football season half the student body went down to Percy Field every day, rain or shine, to cheer the team and scrubs. During the games, organized rooting and col lege songs made every Cornelllan feel that therp wos no name so dear to him as "Cornell." Before and after every athletic contest "Alma Mater" is sung, every student standing with his head uncovered. This feature 1b always carried out, whether the team Is victorious or not, and creates Cor nell spirit. I have often wished Ne braska would adopt a similar custom. OO From the beginning of one's fresh man yeor until his graduation, the one ambition of every Cornelllan Ib to win a "C," or his class numerals, which are next In importance. ThiB con tinued striving to secure honors brlngB all kinds of material for athletic teams. Here even football is of secondary Im portant e to the "crew," and while Cor nell does not always excel in other forms of athletics, she Is pretty sure to turn out a "world's record crew," and it is becoming a retognlzed fact that Cornellians are "natural born oarsmen." In baseball and track ath letics considerable interest is mani fested. Constant practice goes on throughout th fall and winter. OO In spite of the other attractions, a good deal of hard work Is done here. In lact, in order to remain here and enjoy the pleasures of such an ideal college life, the student must work. Each term at least ten hours must be passed by the student, and If he falls he is "busted" and is given three days to leave Ithaca. In order for him to be reinstated the next year he must pass all back examinations. At the present time many students are bid ding their friends "good bye" as a re sult ot receiving a "bust" notice. This system helps to maintain a high stand ard of scholarship and the one favor ite topic of conversation throughout the whole year is "Will I get busted?" Much as I like Cornell, which has been made bo pleasant for me by the generous good-natured Cornellians, I still look anxiously forward to each (Continued on page 4.)
