The student who attends school this
year will have tho opportunity of see
ing tho state legislature in active ses
Dlon. As cltl.ens, and the coming con
trollers in state affairs, the students
ahould avail themselves of the chance
to see bow state legislation is carried
oji and under what circumstances. A
short timo spent at the capitol from
time to time will pay as much as some
lessons. It is a lesson In Itself. By
seeing students Interested In the state
affairs the legislators will understand
more that the university iu an institu
tion Uj bo reckoned with In tho placing
of appropriations.
President Butler of Columbia uni
versity proposes tho establishment by
Columbia of two annual scholarships
at $1,200 each, tho holders of which
Shall pursue advanced study in France,
and the establishment of two fellow
ships by the French government for
afjvanced study at Columbia.

around Lincoln met Thursday night In
Palladlan hall. Forty camo In from
Wenlpyan on a special car and about
the same number nttended from the
university. The Lincoln Business Col
lege and the Lincoln Medical College
were also represented. After a pleas
ant social hour in which everybody
took part tho following program was
given:

The University of Michigan is now
run on standard time, which was
adopted to take effect January 1, 1903.
Cornell is the first American univer
sity to have a university club In Eng
land. The club, composed of gradu
ates of Cornell, consists of forty mem
bers, and Is known as the Cornell club
of England
The Viceroy of Hankln, acting for
the Chinese government, has presented
the Columbia university with a set of
the first issue of the great Chinese en
cyclopaedia,
volumes.

The Seniors won both matches in the
final fencing tournament last night by
defeating the Freshmen 8 to 1, and the
law school team G to 3. They thus won
the inter-class championship and are
entitled to their class numerals over

Tho total cost of the University of
Michigan to the state Is less than one
first-class battleship, and yet It haa
graduated 17,184 persons, not Includ
ing those who received a partial edu
cation. Altogether 30,000 persons have
received Instruction at the university.
It offers great opportunities for discus
sion, the question of which Is best for
the state, 30,000 well educated people,
or one battleship.
