school, Is mentioned as a candidate for
Bpeaker of the house.
Mr. Williams has been elected coach
by the University of Minnesota for
next year at a salary of $3,000, an ad
vance of $500 over what ho received for
the past year.

INTERSTATE DEBATES.
All students who purpose to present
themselves as candidates for positions
on the interstate debate teams this year
are requested to confer with Professor
Fogg as early as possible this week
Unions to Debate Doane
The Union Debating club will debate
with Doane college Saturday evening.
January 10. at 8 o'clock, in Union hall
The question under discussion will
be. "Resolved, That the tariff gives
the trusts an undue advantage." The
Unions will be represented by Messrs.
Schward. Mllek and Paul, who will de
bate the affirmative side of the question.
There will be no official judges for
this debate, the result being deter
mined upon otherwise. Every one In
terested is invited to be present at
the contest.

One feature of the Live Stock Judg
ing Parliament that is to be held in
Lincoln January 23-31 is a contest for
prizes. Several prominent breeders.
Including Thomas Mortimer, of Madi
son, Riley Pros, of Albion, William
Ernst, of (Iraf; W. A. Apperson, of
TecuniBeh; (). P. Hendershot. of He
bron; Col. F. M Woods, U. S. A., the
"Nebraska Duroc-Jersey association and
Professors Burnett and Smith offer
sums aggregating over $100 for those
showing the greatest profit iency in
judging different classes of animals
The 'contest will take place on the last
day and will be open to all who enroll
for the parliament
Two carloads of choice young breed
ing bulls will be shipped in for prac
tice work in the selection of sires
Many of these will be available for
purchase should they be wanted
Practice will also be given on the
selection of steers for the feed lot
The programs of the various agric ul
tural meetings which are to be held in
Lincoln January 20-23 promise to be
the most Interesting ever given. The
half rates on railroads are good until
the close of the judging parliament fol
lowing the meetings, so it is expected
many will take advantage of the op
portunities offered by attending both.
The indications are favorable for a
large an enthusiastic gathering of
stockmen.

is being prepared by Professors Bessey,
Hruner, Barbour, Burnett and Sweezy,
will soon be out. It is to be used in
the public schoolB throughout Nebraska.
The David Garrick Comedy company
received quite a disappointment at
York, the crowd being very small, but
were fairly pleased with their atten
dance at Falrbury considering the
stormy weather. Owing to Coach
Booth's visit east the company has dis
banded until next spring, when another
play will bo presented.
