One much Interested In football said
last evening atp ractice, "I believe that
by the end of the season Nebraska will
have a better team than she had last '
year."
Almost everyone is beginning to see
,
that there is hope of a brilliant future
before the team. Because some of the
old players did not return Is no rea
con that the team will not be a win
ning one. Good men are being trained
for every position and Minnesota will
find she has no easy thing when she
meets Nebraska on the 18th.
The manager of the Ohio State Uni
versity football team discovered a fel
low carefully taking notes on the sig
nals and tactics during practice one
day last week. The man was ordered
to clear out, but he refused, and pro
duced credentials to prove that he was
a freshman In the O. .S. U. However,
it was not believed by the manager
that he could have any good purpose In
view and so ho was unceremoniously
escorted from tho field, with a warning
that It would be dangerous for him to
return.
The following Item was cut from yes
terday's Star. Concerning the football
talk at Minneapolis:
Minneapolis, Oct. 9. Minnesota takes
more Immediate Interest In the Ne
braska team than In any other, since
the Gophers met the Cornhuskers just
eleven days from today. Booth's men
have not yet displayed their form.
Colorado University Is an unknown
quantity, rarely playing any of the
middle western elevens, and conse
quently, little can be gleaned from Ne
braska's score of ten points Saturday.
So far, nothing has transpired to con
tradict the theory that Nebraska has
fully as strong a team as last year.
Supt. of Buildings Leo complains of
the large number of students who dis
regard the signs to "keep v off the
grass," and cut across the campus.
This fall he had long fences placed
along the walks, but students, InBtead
of following the wnlks, climb over the
fences and make paths across the giasB.
He In thinking seriously of stationing
bull dogs along the fnco. The fact
that the university Is a free Institu
tion does not mean that the campus in
a public highway. University students
ought to take enough pride In the ap
pearance of the buildings and grounds
to aid In keeping them as neat as
possible. Although the compus Is en
tirely too small. It can be kept in n
way that would do credit to any insti
tution, if each student would only do
his part.
Coach King is Btill much dissatisfied
with the work of the Wisconsin eleven,
the game with Hyde Park being very
unsatisfactory. The varsity show an
litter lack of team work. Players car
rying tho ball fall to follow their in
terference, and are slow In starting
on the offensive. Hard and steady work
will be required from now on to pre
pare the team for the coming cham
pionship games. i
The Badgers will have a mascot this
year, so says the Daily Cardinal:
"Wisconsin's football team will have
a badger for a mascot against this year.
131111c so ably filled tho place last year
that Manager Kllpatrick gladly ac
cepted the tender of another badger for
this year.
"George B. Nelson, '98, found him
early in the summer and has been
coaching him for the place ever
Bince. The badger is christened "I key"
after the (amour player of former
days. Kllpatrick expects him some day
this week."
One of the yellB used by Colorado
might be changed enough to make It
useful to Nebraska. Two rooting
squads on different sides of the field

the other the next and so on until
the last line, when the whole force
joins In and make the air scream:
Say!
What?
That's What!
What's What?
That's what they all say!
What do they all say?
Nebraska, Nebraska, Nebraska!
The class rivalry between the Fresh
men and Sophomores at Lawrence Uni
versity came to a climax a week ago,
when the Sophs broke up a Freshman
party and captured one of the enemy.
They carried their prisoner to a safe
retreat and, after painting his face and
body with a solution of Iodine, they
turned him loose. The Frcshle Is
badly blistered as a result of the ap
plication of oxalic add to remove the
color.
While the Sophomore were busy with
their prisoner, his classmates repaired
to the college campus and bedaubed
the steps and entrances to all college
buildings with red paint. Several stu
dents were not permitted to entei'
the class rooms the following morning,
and a wholesale expulsion is antici
pated. wwwv
A great Interest Is being manifested
In the coming game with Knox College.
There all the students make a trlaj for
the football team. He who does not
get out and show whether or not he
has the stuff In him Is completely ig
nored by the others, and as a result
everybody gets out at least once.
The names of Cartelyou, Tobln and
Borg have been added to the training
table list.

Enthusiastic Meeting, from Pago I.
Idea concerning the number. The rail
roads would probably give those who
took advantage of the trip the oppor
tunity to remain longer In Minneapo
lis. If the students would give all the
.Information possible, and push the
matter great results would be accom
plished. The meeting then came to a clone,
after singing college songs. The feel
ing of those prosent was that football
had been given a good send off.
