GETTING INTO SHAPE Varsity and Scrubs Practice Hard Will Be Ready for Grin ned Put Up good Showing. The college team under Coach Drain is putting up the kind of football that will score against the varsity some day, unless the members of the latter manage to cIobo up their line a little better. Big openings last night en abled the scrubs to go through for two three and five yards, but it didn't last long and the scrubs came off the field tho losers by three touchdowns. The scrubs started the game by kicking off to "Cort" who failed to return. Ben edict kicked 30 yards to Kaynor, who returned tho compliment at the next opportunity. Bender started down the line for a touchdown, but ran against a circumstance and landed outside the line. Benedict kicked to the scrubs, who fumbled, and Cortelyou made the first touchdown. Cotton kicked 35 yards to Bell, who returned 15. Benedict Bent the pig skin down the field for 40 yards to Raynor, who made a 2 yard return. Raynor returned the kick and Bender made a star run of 20 yards, but was downed by Cotton. The second half, Tobin for the var sity, kicked off to the scrubs' five yard line. On the third down with 10 yards to gain, they kicked out to Bender, who made a small return and a Beries of successful plays landed tho ball be hind tho lino. Tobin again kicked off to the 5 yard line and then the college team began to play ball. Myers made a 5 yard return and soon 5 yards more was added on the third down. A gain of 5 yards for offside play followed and then another 5 yards on line bucks. At this period of the game the ball was fumbled, but recovered with a small gain and another 5 yards followed. Then came a loss of 3 yards on an at tempted end run and the scrubs were forced to kick. Mikel made 20 yards and soon the ball was placed on the lino for tho third touchdown. Tho 1st squad was increased by the addition of Marsh, who played left tackle. Cortelyou played end, Thorpe was on tho field, but did not get Into the game. Shallenberger; sergeant-at-arms, Fred Upson. There was much rlvarly for the po sition of sergeant-at-arms, those put ting up tho strongest fight for it being Miss Zola Delleker, Mr. Cotton and Mr. 'Upson. The department of education re ceives several inquiries dally in regard to gymnastics, athlete rules and in door games. Systematic exorcise, is coming to be more and more accepted as a health and life preserver for students, espe cially to those who are accustomed to an active outdoor life' It was long ago accepted as such in colleges and universities. As univer sity students leave our institution and engage In teaching they Instill more or less athletic spirit Into high schools and academies. Ex-Governor Crittenden of Missouri, visited the university Wednesday. PRICE THREE CENTS, ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING Large Crowd Attends Coaches and Captain Speak Inter est Aroused for Grln nell Game. There were yells, Bongs, speeches and npplauae at the mass meeting yes terday; all in tho interest of football. Prof. Wyer had charge of the moetlng and Mr. Starr led the singing. Tho team and coaches were present and oc cupied seats on thp rostrum. Dean Bcssey in introducing Mr. Wyer, said tho latter had como to preach tho gos pel of enthusiasm, and this fact was emphasized throughout the meeting. The master of ceremonies gavo tho signal for tho university yell, and tho Btudents responded with a spirit that was admirable. Assistant Coach Pal mer was then Introduced. Mr. Palmer said a team could accomplish anything if it had tho proper spirit. Ho was a member of the Qrinnell team several years ago, and although tho mon wero light they defeated Minnesota on her own grounds. He felt confident that Nebraska could defeat tho Gophers if the team was given tho proper sup port. The speaker said ho was a Ne braskan for tho present and would do all in his power to defeat Minnesota. The studonts then sang another song after which Coach Booth was intro duced. Tho coach said tho team had more spirit than over before, and that tho men would win games whon they knew that tho university was behind them. What is needed is more organ ized rooting. Those who wero not in tho game could not realizo what a help good rooting was. Tho mon on tho bleachers could aid in winning games if they would get out and cheer at tho proper times. The speaker urged those present to get out and watch tho prac tice, to cheer when good plays were? made, and encourage tho men. He com mended tho scrubs for tho enthusiasm and zeal which they have manifested. There was Just as -much honor In play ing on the second eleven as in playing on the first, said Mr. Booth. Without a good scrub team you can not have a good varsity team. Captain Westover was called for and spoke for a few minutes In an earnest manner. He urged the students to sup port the team; a team that had more spirit than any team which had repre sented this Institution In several years. Tho men worked hard, said he. They did not have to be coaxed, and he felt certain that they would win tho games If the students would do their part Mr. Wyer then spoke of the com ing game with Minnesota. Ho said the railroads had made a rate of $8, pro vided 250 would go.
