The dobntei-H last Friday wore no
lens heroes than the HiicceHHful foot

that each was given three IiIrIi tosses

fested on this occasion was such as is
usually only seen on the athletic field.
PRESIDENT DROPPER TO LEC
TURE HERE.
Oarrett Dropper, president of the
University of South Dakota, will lec
ture at the university Monday even
ing, April 21. His subject will be "The.
Real Japan." Professor Dropper was
a resident of that country for a num
ber of years as a professor in the Uni
versity of Japan, hence his lecture will
be of unusual Interest and value. Ad
mission will be free and everyone is
cordially Invited to attend.
The work of the opposing classes in
their attempt to break up the sopho
more party last Saturday night by
throwing foul smelling chemicals into
the dancing room was certainly de
plorable. The average student is not
averse to innocent amusement when
it is not carried to an extreme, but
when even the rules of common de
cency are overstepped by resorting to
dirty tricks of this kind it is high
time that a halt Is called.
To those who heard the debate last
Friday night it was very apparent that
our men had given careful study to
every phase of the question. The re
sult of tho contest was what would
naturally be expected after the rigid
training the men have undergone the
last three months. The three hundred
hours which each man had put ipon
the question gave him a mastery of it,
such as only a specialist could have.
The successful outcome of this debate
was due in a large measure to the
untiring efforts of Professor Fogg who,
since ho took the work of his depart
ment, has raised the standard or the
debates In this institution higher than
it ever was before.
NEW BOOKS AT THE LIBRARY.
The university library has recently
received a shipment of books amount
ing to about forty volumes, comprising
English and American works on phil
osophy, history, English and classics.
The set of early English text series
has now been completed, tho number of
volumes in the library being about 200.
They are prints of early English writ
ings and literature.
Among the books are three volumes
of a publication of the Johns Hopkins
University, called the Kashmirlan
Atharva-beda. The set is a chromo
photography of the birch-bark writings
found In a convent in northern India,
in Ka8mir. They are the original beda
manuscripts written in Sanscrit. This
is tho only complete edition of its kind
in the world and is therefore very valuable.
SCRUBS WIN FROM 'VARSITY.
A picked team from the scrubs de
feated the 'varsity nine Friday after
noon with a score of 1 to (). Captain
Bell's colts did not play with the usual
snap and vigor, which accounts for the
victory of Captain Koehler. Leatherby,
the new pitcher, tossed the ball for the
scrubs and did some remarkably fine
work, holding the 'varsity down to a
small number of hits. The line-up:
'Varsity. Scrubs.

SECRETARY BAILEY SPEAKS.
State Secretary Bailey led a very
helpful meeting for the young men yes
terday. He cited several instances of
men who have been remarkably suc
cessful in business who never go to
their dally work without carrying with
them Borne truth derived from their
period devoted to a systematic Btudy of
the Bible. A knowledge of the Bible,
ho said, is one of the essentials of an
education.
He collected a few statistics from the
Bible study men which will be useful
to him in the state work.
