Dwight Pierce of the entomology de
partment left for his home at Omaha
last week. He will be gone until after
the spring vacation.
Mr. EIHb of Panama spent Wednes
day with his son, O. A. Ellis. While
here Mr. Ellis visited several depart
ments of the university.
A new case for the charts and maps
belonging to the department of botany
has been put into the botanical lecture
room in Nebraska hall.
Two packets of dried plants for the
herbarium were received by the botany
department recently. They Include
specimens of mosses and fungi.
Mr. Cushman of the engineering de
partment is experimenting on a direct
current dynamo without a commutator.
The machine has been built entirely in
the shops.
The physics department has em
ployed Mr. Beebe as a permanent store
keeper. He will be on duty all day
and will have charge of supplies and
care of apparatus. Heretofore the posi
tion was filled by student assistants.
P. J. O'Gara of the senior class has
built a modification of the "whirling
psychrometer" as devised by John
Fo8sler, which is pronounced to be a
great improvement over the original
machine. It is to be used in the de
partment of botany.

are at present studying the condition
of the national bank during Jackson's
administration.
The classes under Professors Ran
dolph and Klrkpatrlck will give a re
cital next Wednesday evening. The
program will consist entirely of mu
sical compositions.
Tho University of Michigan defeated
Cornell Saturday night in a dual track
meet, held at Ann Arbor. The score
was 42V6 to 29Vfc. Michigan won five
of the eight events.
From now on It 1b expected that re
citals will be given every week by the
graduates and postgraduates of the
school of music It is probable that
one will be given every Wednesday
evening.
W. J. Bryan has placed, temporarily,
in the university art rooms two por
traits of himself and wife. They are
a large water color and an oil paint
ing by Mr. Clarkson of Chicago and
are a valuable addition to the art
rooms.
Thursday evening Mrs. Dean of tho
Latin department talked to the mem
bers of the Latin club on the "Life and
Customs of the Romans.'! An unusual
amount of interest. is being shown by
the members of this club. The next
meeting will be held at the houBe of
Dr. and Mrs. Bessey.
