Tho senors are to be congratulated
on the resolution of the young men
of tho daHH to wear caps and gowns
at the commencement exercises This
is a custom to which ago, if nothing
else, has lent dignity. It obliterates
any distinction that might otherwise
exist In Lie dress of the graduates and
puts all on a level.
While there is no occasion as yet for
alarm, the fact that a case of smallpox
was found among the students ought
to put every one on his guard. There
Is no need to be unduly frightened by
these periodical scares that strike
every community at frequent intervals,
yet there is good cause for unusual pre
cautions Just now. Every person who
has not been successfully vaccinated
within the last few years owes it to the
community to be vaccinated at once.
Great precautions Bhould be taken to
prevent contagion from unsanitary
surroundings. A little caution may
prevent a serious epidemic.
MAGNITUDE OF THE SOLAR
SYSTEM.
Prof. Eric Doolittle of the University
of Pennsylvania, in a recent public lec
ture on "Double Star Astronomy," In
troduced a very clever and useful rep
resentation of the comparative size of
our Bolar system. He said that if a
globe two feet in diameter be taken to
represent the sun, the earth on the
same scale would be represented by a
very small pea, placed in a circular
path 215 feet distant from it. The
moon would In the same miniature sys
tem be represented by a small shot
moving about the pea and six Inch
from It. There would be seven other
particles revolving about the large
globe, the seven other planets, but
these are not considered In his model.
Then comes the Inconceivable magni
tude of the heavens, tho nearest fixed
star would bo represented by another
large globe placed 8,000 miles away.

It has always been my
pleasure to speak of
the advisability of
making an early selec

pick from the largest
selection, as well as to
avoid the long waits
that are often unavoid

MAY I NOT HAVE
the pleasure and satis

your orders early for
the approaching sea

are undoubtedly aware
is the largest and most
elaborate in city, and
comprises not only the
pick of the staples, but
also the fancy fabrics,
the colorings of which
are most beautiful.
