Nob as sconnd cIiish mull iimttor Many pconlc. wo are not familiar ' with student life, misjudge the sin dot and ouo.stion the moral character of the University. This error is due in part to tho fact that the student's environments aro peculiar, and he be comes independent and looses some of his timidity Hut, as far as his pur pose is concerned, there is little ques tion. It is as noble and upright as could well be. Ills independence, which Is tho result ot having to forco his way through au Institution by individual effort, Is too often mistaken for arrogance, Insolence and down right meanness. Tho student, thero roro, In traveling from place to placo should keep in mind that lie leaves an Impression and It should be such as to correct a com moo error. I3y so doing ho would bo discharg ing a part of the obligation which he owes to the Institution that he at tends. Now tha", tho ground Is covcicd with snow and students aro required by foruc or circumstances to use sldo walks oxclusivcly. it might be ap propriate to mention an evil which his already recolveti more or loss notice in theso columns. We refer to the custom of cutting across lots on tho way to and from classes and drill. This custom which has been growlnu of lato Is threatening to ruin tho beauty of the campus. The grass plots are marked with paths which already aro prominent enough to mar their boauty. This Is an evil that public opinion i CONE, The Installment Tailor 115 North 11th. oucht to kill. There should bo In tho University such a strong senti ment against it that it would dlo of ItB own accord. Studonts should tako nn Individual prldo in the appear ance of tho grounds and should strive to keep them always in tht best possible shape. Within two weeks the preliminary debatos for tho chooslmr of contest ants to represent the University in the intorstato contests will bo held. The preliminary contests oucht to receive tho cordial support of the studuit body. The prospects for a winning team this year aro certainly bright. Never before have tho de bates been put on such thoroughly intellectual grounds. Never before havo they been managed in so busi ness liko a way. The new svstem ol havinu a special class for those who arc likely to make the teams will insure the dcvelopcmcnt of all thci talent there is In the men. This much has been done by those who arc (iirccLlnu nlfalrs. Hut Uicy cannot do it all. A large part of the responsibility for tho success of the debates lies with tho students themselves. Without, student siid port tho debating Hoard can do little. EITort Is being made to have a large and enthusiastic audience present at Lno preliminaries. This should 11 pet tho approval and assistance of the students and they should do all that tliev are able to do by turning out and making the meeting a rousing success MKMHKUS MKKTING SI,MHY Next Sunday afternoon the tegu lar devotional meeting of the Y.M.
