changed conditions in athletics.

Will Heed Dunroy's New Volume
of Verne.
When Will Reed Dunroy saw tho
first copy of his new volume of verso,
"Tumbleweeds." it may bo well
imagined that lie took great satisi ac
tion in the deidcatlon: "To My
Heloved Mother." For the book is a
credit to him, typographically as well
as llterarlly considered. Tho advance
copies have conic to Sioux City. It is
better than "Com Tassels."
In Ills "foreword," I)unro has
ulven the purpose of the book:
Across tho plain tho tumbleweed
Rolls lazily Its ways,
A target briefly In Its Might
For Idle, curious gaze.
No purpose havo they in their
Mights,
Nor a'm, nor lesson taught:
Like tumbleweeds they scarce com
mand The effort of a thought.
It they but make one instant gay,
Or while one tedious hour,
Their purpose has been found In
full
The fruit has crowned the Mower.
It should be said that Dunroy has
omitted somo things of a melancholy
vein, that his writings published 111
this book might properly fulfill the
wish of his foreword.
Some of I lie torsos ate properly
poet ry and others are metrical lines,
full ol color, ol sun, ol shadow, and
of a subtle sense of things seen and
felt which betokens an author well
removed from the ranks of newspaper
rhy. listers. His car is true and some
of his linos are rcmarkblc For lu
st ami1 one which appeard in 'Corn
Tassels," Mr. Dunroy's preceding
olumo or verse, in ''Wind In the
Corn," repeated by request:
And list to the lisp of the lashing
leaves
As the wind blows through the
corn.
More than common attention has
been paid to the verses, "Nebrasky."
and, as Mr. Dunroy has been called
tne poet 01 .enrasKa, a erse is
given:
A wide, wide stretch o' level land,
With here and llnr a town,
An' broad, Mat 1 Ivors, sluggishly
An' slowly lnovin' down
An' that's Nebrasky.
In an introductory by Willis Marsh
all, author or "Cycles" and other
verse, this is said of Mr. Dunroy's
work:
"Our author has not attempted the
statclincss of the epic. His poems
oeal with tho simple, commonplace
things of everyday lrfo: and yet he
has given to these a touch of the

Por the reasons that the men and
women of tho west are poets by sent
iment, whether in town or on tlio
farm, and that Dunroy sots to words
many of tho thoughts tho western
iro suggests, his book has tho right
of way to success. Thoro aro many
things in "Tumbleweeds" which aro
worth haying. Tho collection is
truly a very dainty and refreshing
hunch, between covers of tho croons
of wavinc prairlo grass brightened
with gold like goldenroa. -From the
