The approaching eloclion for luot
ball manager for l!H2 Is hrinnlrn;
forth a now and vital uuestlon: Shall
Nebraska have a graduate manager (.f
utilities oreontlnue with her Drcsent
system of untleru radii tes? It is nc
inu nred hy some members ol the
board that "Nebraska fall In line with
Chicago, Northwestern, Michigan,
and Wisconsin by placing the general
supervision ol all athletics undei one
head. It lias. been found cheaper 111
the lonn iun to do tins. The man
ager is paid a salary and devotes his
time to the general betterment of all
around at hletics.
The men who ad unite this move,
say it Is one of the results of our
changed conditions in athletics.
They claim that in scheduling with
the bin nine whose mummers are the
sumo for several years, tho student
manager, if he be ablo to cope with
them, does so at a disadvantage.
Tlioy are paid for service and conse
quently keop close watch on all kinds
of athletics in all Kinds of places.
The managers become acquainted and
that helus. "Now that Nebraska has
her ooiTcrs tilled ano llnancial matters
on a lirm foot! ml' tho graduate man
age should be by all means installed.
Thoro aro so mo low wh' still cling
to tho student manager idea. They
claim it honors the upper classmen
and what is lost in oxporience is al
most made up oy the enthusiasm or
tho student manager. He foi the
time being devotes his energy with
abllltv and success.
11m last two, seasons of lojithalLl
management under Messrs Tukey
and (Jowglll have neen especially suc
cessful in respect to both fuotbail
and U nances. When tho old debts
were all paid there was nothing in
the troasury. Tho base nail manage
ment started tho eastern trip on
personal funds. This year arter all
outstanding obligations wero can
celled, there remained between $3.7)00
and $1,000 on hand. There was some
talk of hiring u gruduate manager
for tho lust season on a salary. This
met with considerable approval. And
now that thoro is somo talk ul mak
ing tho like offer to Mr. Cowgill, it
moots with general approval.. Tho
student bodv appreciate good athlet
ics. It is not known whether Mr.
Coworili would accpt or reject the
offer If it Is made. But in any caco
ho is without doubt the man for the
plnco.

Will Heed Dunroy's New Volume
of Verne.
When Will Reed Dunroy saw tho
first copy of his new volume of verso,
"Tumbleweeds." it may bo well
imagined that lie took great satisi ac
tion in the deidcatlon: "To My
Heloved Mother." For the book is a
credit to him, typographically as well
as llterarlly considered. Tho advance
copies have conic to Sioux City. It is
better than "Com Tassels."
In Ills "foreword," I)unro has
ulven the purpose of the book:
Across tho plain tho tumbleweed
Rolls lazily Its ways,
A target briefly In Its Might
For Idle, curious gaze.
No purpose havo they in their
Mights,
Nor a'm, nor lesson taught:
Like tumbleweeds they scarce com
mand The effort of a thought.
It they but make one instant gay,
Or while one tedious hour,
Their purpose has been found In
full
The fruit has crowned the Mower.
It should be said that Dunroy has
omitted somo things of a melancholy
vein, that his writings published 111
this book might properly fulfill the
wish of his foreword.
Some of I lie torsos ate properly
poet ry and others are metrical lines,
full ol color, ol sun, ol shadow, and
of a subtle sense of things seen and
felt which betokens an author well
removed from the ranks of newspaper
rhy. listers. His car is true and some
of his linos are rcmarkblc For lu
st ami1 one which appeard in 'Corn
Tassels," Mr. Dunroy's preceding
olumo or verse, in ''Wind In the
Corn," repeated by request:
And list to the lisp of the lashing
leaves
As the wind blows through the
corn.
More than common attention has
been paid to the verses, "Nebrasky."
and, as Mr. Dunroy has been called
tne poet 01 .enrasKa, a erse is
given:
A wide, wide stretch o' level land,
With here and llnr a town,
An' broad, Mat 1 Ivors, sluggishly
An' slowly lnovin' down
An' that's Nebrasky.
In an introductory by Willis Marsh
all, author or "Cycles" and other
verse, this is said of Mr. Dunroy's
work:
"Our author has not attempted the
statclincss of the epic. His poems
oeal with tho simple, commonplace
things of everyday lrfo: and yet he
has given to these a touch of the

"" v"' ""' ' "iio cjiivi uiid mur
mur of the brook, nothing ostenta
tious, nothing severe, all in accord
with tho sweot rhythm or the music
of nature-.
Por the reasons that the men and
women of tho west are poets by sent
iment, whether in town or on tlio
farm, and that Dunroy sots to words
many of tho thoughts tho western
iro suggests, his book has tho right
of way to success. Thoro aro many
things in "Tumbleweeds" which aro
worth haying. Tho collection is
truly a very dainty and refreshing
hunch, between covers of tho croons
of wavinc prairlo grass brightened
with gold like goldenroa. -From the
