TWO KINDS OF EDUCATION.
A pamphlet containing Professor
.1. II. Johnson's address on, "Two
Kinds or Education for Engineers,"
beforo his students In tho Coileco of
Engineering or tho University or
Wisconslu, has been received at heud
quartors of tho Civil Engineering
department, and Is being widely roau
by tho englnooring students. Follow
ing are a row extracts rrgm tho In
Production of tho address.
"Education may bo doiined as a
moans of gradual emancipation rrom
tho thraldom of incompetence. Two
gonoral classes or competency aro
generated in tho schools, com potency
to Borvn and compotoncy to appre
ciate and onjoy."
"By ci mpoteney to sorve Is meant
that ability to perform one's duo
proportion of tho world's work which
brings to, society a common benefit,
and which makes or this world a
continually better homo for tho raco
and which tends to fit "'the raco for
that (mortal life in which it puts its
trust. By compotoncy tu appreciate
and enjoy Is meant that ability to
undorstand, to appreciate, and to
assimilate those great personal
achievements of tho past and pres
ent in tho Uelds of tlio truo, tlio
beautiful and tho good, which brings
Into our lives a Kind or peace, and
joy, and gratitude which can bo
found In no other way."
"It, is lino that all kinds of ele
mentary education contribute! alike
to both of these ends, but in tho so
calied higher education it is too com
mon to choose between them rather
than to Includo thorn both, iflnco It
Is only Fcrvlce which tho world is
willing to pay ror, it is only those
competent and willing to servo a
Diiblic or private utility who are
compensated In a financial way. It Is
the education which brings compet
ency to serve, therefore, which is
often called the utilitarian and Fomc
times spoken of contPinutuousiy as
tho breaa-and-butter education. On
the other hand the education which
gives a competency to apprcclaU
and enjoy Is commonly spoken of as
a cultural carnation.
"As to which kind or education is
the higher and nobler, ft' they mus
be contrasted, it all depends on tin
point or view. If personal pleasure
and happiness is tho chief end and
aim in life, then for that class of
persons who have no disposition to
serve, the cultural education is the
more worthy of admiration and selec
tion, (conditioned of course on the
bodily com Tor ts being so rar provided
Tor a to make all financial compen
sation or no objoct to the Individual.)
Ir. however, service to others is the
most worthy purpose In lire, and if in
addition such service brings the
greatest happiness, then that educa
tion which develops the ability 10
serve, in some capacity, should be
regarded as the higher una more
worthy. This kind of education has
the further advantage that the
moncv consideration it brings makes
its possessor a sclf-suporting member
of souloty instead or a drono or para
site which thoso people must bo
who cannot sorve.''
