CHANUKLLOR ANDREWS ON
HAZING.
The folluwlnir.arlialu Hiving Chun
collor Andrew's opinion on hn.inir'iip
pear in tho Wooster Voice, ulonc
with other evprcssions of prom
inent educators in tills cwmtry on tlie
miestion:
"Tlio wliolo system o In.itii,' and
rushini! Is an abomination, and disre
putahle. It is prohihi teri'i n tlio Uni
versity of Nebraska, and 1 believe
tho time is near at tiand when it will
at least be frowned upon, if not to
tally abolished, in the univoisitles
and colleges of the country.
"In tho lirst place, there is no ex
cuse for it. It is akin to outlawry,
and should not bo countenanced.
Clean athletics among students has
no better friond or supporter than
myself. I believe in football, base
ball, running, jumping, anything
that is orderly and under proper re
straint. Rushes, on the contrary,
smack of tho mob, where bad temper
laulten disulavcd,aiul luuing is 11-
a in thing, worse.
"At a meeting, quite well attend
ed, or heads of universities, the mat
ter came up Tor discussion, and I
lound buTTonc oT""tho number who
was a champion of rushes and halng.
Theio lias boen but one case of the
latter slnco 1 havo been connected
with tho Nebraska university. That
was last spring, when a memunr of
tho law school, a man along in years,
who insisted on woarinu a long beard
or sandy color, after being requested
by classmates to have it removed,
was waylaid and forcibly shaven.
The men guilty ol hazing dici not
lack supporters, and I was told there
wore extenuating circumstances, but
1 do not believe in breaking a law to
corroct an ovll. It Is tjnllkely that
tho olTonso will bo repeated here."
E. Benjamin Andrews, Cnancellor.
