An article appeared iu yesterday's paper stating tho present condition and outlook for the Y. M. C. A. of the I'nlveialty. The report which was given to the public cannot but reflect credit to the University ami the association Itself. The strong position the association holds in the University Is recognized by everyone, and It needs the co-operation of the student body and their hearty support. It Is announced that the next few weeks will be devoted to a canvass for membership and following that a gen eral plea to the student body for pledges to carry on the year's work. The students will then show whether they truly realize the Importance of this work according to the way they respond to the association movements. It is alBO Worthy of note that tho much needed student directory will be published by the association in due time. It's want was In evidence last year and the student body will appre ciate its reappearance. MINNESOTA HOOTERS' CLUB. The enthusiasm which permeated the ranks of the Minnesota rooters last year seems to be lacking this year from the following account of a meet ing, taken from the Minnesota Daily: Tho meeting of the Rooters' club yesterday morning leads one to tho be lief that the famed Minnesota spirit is sadly lacking in life and vigor, as It was oxpected that an immense amount of .enthusiasm would be manifested. Instead of this, dead, Is the only word which will fitly describe the gathering. Ah soon aB the chapel exercises were over, and the faculty had shown their approval and enthusiasm by with drawing, John E. Campbell called the meeting to order In his old time-style, but in vain. He did Indeed induce a few to join him In giving tho yell, but that was all. Tho election of pres . Ident followed and resulted In the election of Alex .la hob by n lnrge ma jority. When Mr. Janen enme to the pint form ho wan greeted with npplnuse, which seem to Indicate that It only needed a HtlrauhiH to arouse the old time enthusiasm. Mr. Janes, how over, threw a damper on tho applause by declining tho honor and refusing to serve. It Is unlikely that the stu dent body will submit to this, however, and every Influence possible will be brought to bear on Mr. Janes to In duce him to reconsider his deter mination and agree to accept the posi tion ns he appears to be the almost unanimous choice of the studens. THE MINNESOTA TEAM. Very little can be learned about the Minnesota team. Coach WilllamB Is very guarded in what he gives out and very little Information finds its way Into the newspapers. The Min nesota Dally publishes the following resume of last week's work on the gridiron- Eery one who has watched the boys at practice for the last week has no ticed a decided improvement nothing brilliant, but a slow, steady Improve ment which evidently has come to stay. The work Is faster and the men show more dash and go than they displayed at the opening of the week. Fewer fumbles mar the scrim mage work and cause the rooters not to look aB blue as they did a week ago when we failed to score against Central high school. That slowness and uncertainty with which the players executed the plays at the opening of tho week has large ly boen done away with. So much new material and so many changes made it difficult for the men to learn the signals for every position. Dr. Will lums does not train a man for one position alone. He has him familiar with the signals and position of every place on the team. He rounds the team into one great machine which re sponds to the signal applied by the field captain and move in any direction except backwards. This explains to a great extent why the playing up to the present time has been rather raggel and loose. One good feature Is the willingness with which the men enter Into the game. There is no hanging back and every man goes into it as if his life depended on It. It took some time to drill this into the minds of the play ers, but It came by slow and steady stages, and now at the end of another week we can look back and see for ourselves the progress that has been made. It was a pleasure and a Joy to hear that Johnny Flynn was back. We needed the little boy to help fill up the line and fill It in his old-time style. The pleasure was not less when Aune put in an appearance, and the sorrow was equally as keen whon he was forced to retire Friday night because of an Injury to his shoulder. We trust that the injury will not keep him out of the game long. Rogers Is playing a steady game at end. A hoady man, a great man to smash Interferences, and a veritable fiend to tackle, are comments heard on every hand. Rlcker of Minneapolis Central high hcuooi, trying ior guuru, piuya wen tor a man of his experience. He is not quite up to grade yot, but he has the making of a good player. Waste, McDonald and Thorpe are playing a good, steady game. They play better on the offensive than on the defensive, but by tho time thoy have harkened to tho remarks of Dr. Williams for a time they will do better.
