adopt and who to nominate , who
teaches everybody and everything , ex
cept "tho humblest man in the land , "
known as the poor negro. ( Ho would
teach him if there wore any votes in
it. ) Ho is a great double. Ho is the
whole doctrine of the trinity of the
fusion forces , who teaches there is no
prosperity , that it is all myth and
mirage. Who teaches himself to teach
others , who teaches himself to believe
he is the only father , son , and savior , of
a rebellious and fallen democracy.
These men and these teachings are
the enemies of good government , good
society , good morals and men. They
are not the real friends of the plain
common people. They want their
votes at any cost , that is all. No love ,
no passion plays , no conned and canned
orations , no "the humblest man in the
laud , clad in the garments of righteous
ness , can put to flight the hosts of
error , " no more "crowns of thorns and
crosses of gold , " for the poor , plain ,
plodding people.

THE MAGAZINE AGE.
Never since printing began lias
periodical literature been so rich , var
ied and attractive as at present. A
laudable artistic rivalry among pub
lishers has brought their productions
to a high pitcli of excellence , while
unusual activity , ingenuity and busi
ness energy has pushed circulation
from city to cross-road the country
over. Keen competition has also
brought the price of excellent maga
zines to a point so low as to touch
the pocket lightly. All this has re
sulted in making us a nation of mag
azine readers. Whore one'family for
merly indulged in a single magazine
and counted 'it a luxury , fifty now
look upon it as a necessity. Progres-
ive people , indeed , feel that they can
hardly keep well abreast of the times
without reading throe or four maga
zines each month. Ordinarily this
would entail 110 little expense , but
right.here the remarkable clubbing
offers arranged by the magazine
' ' Success , ' ' of New York City , afford
most substantial aid by making an
average cut of one-half on ten lead
ing periodicals. Through these offers ,
in fact , one can in some cases secure
four favorite magazines for the price
of one , as may be gleaned from a de
tailed announcement on page 13 of
last issue. The offer would not bo
possible save for the co-operation of
several periodicals in one advertise
ment , thus effecting a material saving
to all concerned especially to maga
zine readers.
" Ship subsidy , with all objection
able features eliminated , ' is to be
the chief concern of the republican
leaders in the next congress , " notes
the Philadelphia Record ( Ind. Dem. ) .
"But should the objectionable fea
tures of the Frye-Hanna scheme of
treasury spoliation be in reality elim
inated , the subsidy-mongers would
have no use for it. ' '

The Charleston News and Courier
learns "from pretty good authority"
that Wade Hampton may enter the race
for the United States Sonatorship in
South Carolina , no matter how many
other candidates there may bo , the only
possible bar to his candidacy being his
lack of health.

on steel should suffer some changes , "
the Springfield Union ( Rep. ) thinks.
"Anything which discriminates against
the American manufacturer and con
sumer cannot be regarded as a protec
tion to our best interests. "
"Any Senator or Ropreaeutativo who
should antagonize the President because
of his efforts to keep unfit men out of
the public service would invite for him
self political disaster , " warns the Omaha
Bee ( Rep. ) . "Mr. Roosevelt has said
that he wishes to measure up to the
standard of a good President. Nothing
is more essential to the attainment of
this than to give the country an honest ,
capable , and efficient public service. "
"The piling up of money in the na
tional strong boxes beyond the stipulat
ed gold reserve anda ] moderate addition
al sum for contingencies is an unmixed
evil , " argues the Philadelphia Evening
Bulletin ( Rep. ) , "withdrawing funds
from trade in which they are needed
and furnishing a continual temptation
to extravagance and jobbery. The
axiom that Federal taxation should be
restricted to the actual necessities of the
Government , economically adminis
tered , is as sound now as it was in the
earlier days of the republic. "
The Columbia ( S. C. ) State ( Dem. )
warmly approves of the suggestion
that all of the candidates in South
Carolina for the United States sena-
torship to succeed McLaurin with
draw in favor of Wade Hampton. ' ' It
would wipe out a reproach which now
rests upon South Carolina , not only in
the eyes of her own people , but in
those of the whole Union , ' ' the State
says. "It would show that the bet
ter thought of South Carolinians had
asserted itself , and that they had
united without distinction of faction
to absolve themselves of the shame of
ingratitude towards one who has done
his state monumental service. ' '
