ANNOUNCEMENT.
In this issue we are pleased to introduce Professor Charles W. French to the readers of THE CONSERVATIVE. His arti
cle , "The Duty of the Public Schools to Democracy , " is a reply tothe , contribution , "Old and Now Methods in Education , "
which appeared in the issue of May 16 , over the signature "W. S. S. "
For a year or so Prof. French has maintained a "School Democracy" at Hyde Park High School , and the publishers
will endeavor to secure a contribution from Prof. French outlining the method and its results.
Frank D. W. Arnold , a brave soldier and solo survivor of the Baxter Springs massacre , will tell the readers of THE

CONSERVATIVE the story of that massacre and his narrow escape during Quantrell's raid.
Dr. L. L. Uhls has given his consent to write upon the subject , "The Political Control of State Institutions. " Dr.
Uhls is , and has for some time past , been superintendent of the Kansas Insane Asylum , situated at Osawattomie , Kansas

His knowledge of the different methods of controlling public asylums , employed in the different states has been , acquired
by extensive travel and observation.
One word with reference to the "Prize Guessing Contest. " The Press Publishing Company of Detroit , Michigan ,
which is the originator of the plan , has submitted the entire matter to the postofflce department , and show copies of
letters which satisfy us that the contest is perfectly legitimate.
Everyone sending a renewal or new subscription is entitled to a guess.
A great many guesses are coming in , and we urge the readers of THE CONSERVATIVE to do their best towards carrying
