Commenting on W. J. Bryan's recent
remarks in favor of a continuance effusion
fusion , the Nashville American ( Dem. )
says : ' 'Democrats who know why they
are democrats and what democracy is
and has ever been , want no fusion with
populists , no flirting with political
derelicts. The party must drop popu
lism or it must go out of business except
as a mere sideshow. "
BREAKING OF THE SOLID SOUTH.
"President McKinley may have done
something towards hastening the dis
ruption of the solid South , but his chief
opponent in the last two presidential
campaigns has done much more , " says
the Nashville Banner ( dem. ) "Had the
democratic party pursued the even tenor
of its way on the old lines , the loyalty
of the South to that party , would have
remained unshaken , for a longer time at
least , but Bryan radicalism , coupled
with Bryan defeats , has been too trying
a test for the unquestioning continuance
in subservience to a party name of ten
million people spread all the way from
the Potomac to the Bio Grande. "
