t be Conservative ,
developed administrative abilities of the
very highest order. He labored xiu-
ceasingly among the people , and record
which he made there is one of which he
and the nation may well be proud.
His death was , undoubtedly , hastened
not only by the exposure and hardships
of his army life and the woiinds he re
ceived in many battles in which he par
ticipated , but by the strain upon his
system in bringing order out of chaos in
Porto Rico.
Mrs. Henry rendered noble service in
that island in establishing schools and
laying the foundation for charitable
work which has been successfully con
tinued since she left the island , and it
was largely through her efforts that the
country was aroused to the needs of the
people there.
Mrs. Henry is entitled , by law , to a
pension of $30.00 a mouth. Many of
the friends of the General have thought
that the most fitting testimonial to his
memory would bo a fund to provide a
modest income for his widow , which
would place her beyond all need or want
for the rest of her life.
The facts of his life are known to a
large number of gentlemen who have
formed themselves into a committee for
the purpose of taking charge of the
work incident to raising and investing
a fund , from which an income may be
derived for Mrs. Henry's benefit.
The officers of that committee are
