World - Herald in
1892 was an anti-sixteen-to-ono journal
and in favor of the gold standard for the
United States. From numerous sane
utterances of that gold standard advo
cate during the campaign of the autumn
of that year Tire CONSERVATIVE takes
the following which may be found in
the issue of that plutocratic exhorter
dated September 21 , 1892 :
"In his Lincoln speech night before
last J. Sterling Morton declared tersely :
'The democratic
strength f the iiom-
pntform ]
agrees
ocratic Position. . . . , , , '
with the people's
party platform on the tariff and with
the republican platform on the cur
rency. ' It is this intermediate position
of the democratic party in the present
campaign which gives it the advantage.
At one extreme is the republican party ;
at the other extreme the independent
party , between the two , occupying the
great middle ground of moderation and
conservatism , are the democratic hosts.
The position is one not only of immedi
ate advantage in the present campaign ,
but it is one which must prove of even
greater advantage in future struggles. "
The Pioneers of
Nebraska all know
Judge John P. Kinney. Ho was the
first chief justice of the state of Iowa ,
some years a member of the supreme
court of Utah and also a representative
in congress and for nearly thirty years a
resident of Nebraska City. The pioneers
all congratulate him upon his recent
marriage to a most worthy and estima
ble lady. The judge is eighty-three
years of ago but only looks about fifty.
He has sincere wishes for his happiness
from a thousand old friends.
LUDICROUS ALABAMA POLITICS.
The history of the constitutional con
vention movement in Alabama has a
decidedly ludicrous side. After the act
of the legislature to submit the propos
ition to the people had been ratified at
the polls , primaries were assembled to
name candidates. The people , by com
mon consent , said , We want good men.
That kind generally were nominated
and elected , and lo ! a count showed
that a big majority was for sound
money.
The fiatists and sixteen-to-oners were
dumbfounded. Governor Johnston was
thrown into hysterics. He saw his
chances for wearing a senatorial toga
vanishing. He must do something. So
he procured his county political commit
tees , over the state , to ask him to call
the legislature in extra session , to repeal
the act authorizing a constitutional con
vention. We know the rest.
These are the facts. The people were
not thinking of a political or partisan

constitution. They wanted a good OAQ ;
they chose good men to do the work ,
and it turned out that nearly all the del
egates were for sound money. The
populistic-Bryauistic-Johnstoneito poli
ticians , in the villages and at the coun
try cross roads , were passed.by ) when
sober work was to be done for the state ,
and that alarmed the boss , Governor
Johnstono , and ho alarmed his hench
men , and they have managed to annul
the action of ninety per cent of the
state's intelligence. The repeal of the
act authorizing the convention is a high
handed bit of usurpation , carried
through by a mere squad of politicians.
