Foreign markets and consumers keep

dred thousand at work on the farms of
the American Republic. And the num
ber thus employed will constantly in
crease with the Bwif tly growing demand
for our food exports in all parts of the
globe.
The export of the manufactured goods
of the United States , especially of imple
ments made of iron and steel , also in
creases each year. It is safe to say that
the number of people now supported in
the United States in agriculture , manu
facture and commerce by foreign mar
kets , aggregates moro than five millions.
The world's markets are the markets
for the farmers , factories and transpor
tation of the United States.
Rations are gratuitously distributed
by the general government of the United
States to the poor and forlorn in the
streets of Havana. But the homeless
and foodless in Now York and other
American cities are not fed that way because -
cause it is not permitted by the consti
tution.
Augustus F. Harvey , formerly a resi
dent and prominent figure in the social
and political life of Nebraska City , has
recently been appointed the actuary of
the German Mutual Life company of
St. Louis and also the Kansas Mutual
Life company of Topeka. Mr. Harvey
has long been eminent and esteemed as
a very capable and reliable adept in in
surance.
