Sir : I have to report that the
strength of my command has been re
duced by the departure of forty-five
men of Company C , First dragoons ,
ander the orders of the captain. They
left here this morning for Fort Leaven-
worth , agreeable to instructions from
the colonel of the First dragoons , and
are designed , I learn , for distant service.
I am thus left with thirty-nine enlisted
men ( some on the sick report ) and
seven citizen mechanics to erect the
quarters , defences , &c. , for the fort con
templated at this point , and to furnish
the necessary camp guard. Eight
privates were reported "for duty" this
morning , that is for guard duty and
incidental fatigue duty. Very respect
fully , Your obedient servant ,

Commanding.

Sir : Since I had made the enclosed
communication to Colonel Kearney , I
have been advised of the arrival of
twenty-five recruits for the First infan
try , which will be sent up the Missouri
at once , and will also direct that Lieut.
Smith and detachment of Moore's troop
will return to Fort Leavenworth and
join their company.
I would respectfully recommend that
Prince's company at the new post , fall
back on Fort Leavenworth , bringing
with them all the materials for the new
work , awaiting a more propitious period
for its construction. I have the honor
to be , Very respectfully ,

Colonel :

I hope to receive orders to stop the
new work on Table creek , so that you
can take the whole of Moore's troop and
not leave any part of it at the new post ,
as I have understood you intended to re
tain Lieut. Smith and some ten or twelve
Dragoons at that place , and that Lieut.
Prince may bo directed to return to Fort
Leaveuworth , bringing with him all the
lumber and materials to bo perserved at
the latter place , for future use. Prince's
command , oven if his company wore
full , is entirely too small to effect any
salutary object and would in the event
of any excitement among the Indians ,
bo placed in a very delicate position , it
not being under any Icind of protective
work or in the reach of ready assistance.
I am , very respectfully ,
Your Obedt. Servt. ,
GEO. M. BROOKE ,
Brig. General U. S. A.
Colonel S. W. Kearney ,

Commanding Fort Leavenworth.

Headquarters Camp Kearney ,

Sir : I desire to correct an error I
made a few days ago in the report of
the strength of my command. In speak
ing of the number of sick , I stated there
were thirteen sick. This was wrong for
I thereby included those sick in Com
pany O , First dragoons , most of whom
went hence with the company. This
morning's report exhibits a total strength
of thirty-seven enlisted men certainly
too few to erect this post. Not less than
two full companies should be kept here
for that object and for the police of this
frontier. I can mount but one sentinel
and provide the men for the service of
the quartermaster's department. Should
less than two companies be retained
here , I suggest to the general whether
Fort Leavenworth would not be a more
appropriate station for me in the ab
sence of Colonel Kearney than this ,
where I see no early prospect of there
being oven a captain's command.
I find the post route to this place a
veiy tedious one. I recommend there
fore that communication for this com
mand be sent to Fort Leavenworth with
orders to send thorn thither by express.
I have not a single horse for duty , nor
to follow a trespassing party of Otoes.
Respectfully , N Your Obedt. Servt. ,

Sir : I have to report that Company
A , First infantry (58 ( , aggregate ) under
the command of First Lieutenant
Prince , First infantry , arrived here this
morning from Table creek.
I avail myself of this occasion to say ,
with a view to keep you advised of matters -
tors connected with the march upon
Santa Fo , that not a company of the
regiment authorized to bo raised by the
Hon. Sterling Price has yet reached here ,
nor do I know positively that any portion
of that force is on the march. I have
been shown a letter stating that he had
accepted as many companies as ho re
quired. Mr. T. L. Price , who was ex
pected to raise a separate battalion , I
learn has abandoned the intention of
making the attempt. No news from
Colonel Kearney. Respectfully ,

General : I have the honor to ac
knowledge the receipt , yesterday , of
your communication of the 16th of July
last , in reference to the purchase of the
reservations at old Fort Kearney.
In the early part of 1846 I left Fort
Leavenworth , with General Brooke ,
Colonel Kearney and Major Wharton ,
for the purpose of establishing a new
post at or near the mouth of Table
creek.
The day after our arrival the site of
old Fort Kearney was selected and
General Brooke , anticipating important
dispatches from Washington in relation
to the war with Mexico , left the same
day witli Colonel Kearney for Fort
Leavenworth , leaving Major Wharton
to construct the work ; having for this
purpose Mooro's ' company of the First
