There was an old fashioned spelling
match at the school house in district
No. 16 last Friday, the Ball school spell
ing against No. 16. The Thomas school
also held aapelling match with the Kins
man school the same day.

- Tom Lynch marketed grain in Platte

Mrs. Christ Iossi was visiting in Col
umbus Hunday.
John Iossi was sawing wood for Henry
BJems last week.
Ed Biggins is painting the buildings
on the farm he recently purchased.
Simon Iossi was visiting with Albert
Groasoicklaus, one of his old neighbors,
Sunday.
Leffelholz Bros., who have rented the
B. W. Gentleman farm for this year,
have ahingeled the house.
Iossi Bros, are obopping down some
trees whioh they will saw into lnmber
with their gasoline rig in a few days.
Sunday and Monday made us think
spring was coming. But don't you put
your' furs away yet, as there will be
plenty of cold weather.
Walker Township.
John Swanson made a business trip to
Columbus last Wednesday and returned
the next day.
The second wolf hunt came off last
week and no wolf got hurt the least bit,
as far as we know.
August Dahlbergis home from Omaha.
He reports that his wife is getting along
nicely at the hospital.
C. A. Peterson, who is now a member
of the board of supervisors, spent most
of last week in Columbus attending a
regular meeting of the county board.
Jack Frost is still holding on to his
grip; but we have had but little snow bo
far, and stock cattle are doing all right
fn the stalk fields. Very few cattle are
on reed in this neighborhood.

of supervisors met at 2 o'clock.

Supervisor Schwarz now stated to
the board that he had made arrange
ments with Dr. AV. S. Evans to appear
in person before the board this p. m.
with reference to matters pertaining
to the county physician for the year
1909.
Dr. W. S. Evans now appeared be
fore the board, after which it " was
moved by Supervisor Goetz that the
board take a recess for a short time
in order to give the special committee
on county physician time to confer
with Dr. Evans on the above matter.
Motion carried and the chair declared
the board at ease for a time.
Upon re-convenine of the board at
the call of the chair, the following
was presented:
To the Honorable Board of Supervisors
of Piatte County. Nebraska:
Gentlemen I will act as county
physician for the year 1909 tor the
sum of three hundred dollars.
($300.00). visiting county patients at
the poor farm. St.-Mary's hospital and
the county jail, furnishing medicines
and surgical dressings.
I also will make one visit of invest
igation to any given case within a ra
dius of ten miles of Columbus, at the

actual cost of livery.

The special committee atmointoi on
county physician now made the follow
ing report in connection with th
above proposition of Dr. AV. S. Evans:
We .your committee, appointed on
county physician, beg leave to make
the following report: We have given
the subject due consideration and rec
ommend that Dr. W. .SEvans be de
clared county physician for the sum
of three hundred dollars per ve&r. for
the year 1909. his duties to be the
same as per his-proposition in writing
to this board, which is hereto attached
and made a part hereof.

After a lengthy discussion on jan
itor for the court house and court
house square It was moved that bids
on janitor filed with the clerk be re
ferred to a committee of the whole.
Motion carried.
It was now moved and seconded that
Thomas Jaworski be appointed jani
tor for the fiscal year 1909 at a salarv
of $375.00. Motion carried.

It was now moved by Supervisor
Goetz that the majority report be
adopted.
Substitute motion was offered by
Supervisor Schwarz that, the minority
report be adopted.
Substitute motion was put by the
chairman and the substitute motion
was lost. A vote was then taken on
the motion to adopt the majority re
port, which was carried.
Supervisor Schyarz now addressed
the board with reference to the stock
ing of the comity farm for the ensu
ing year, also for the purchasing of
necessary farming utensils. after
which an itemized list was agreed
upon by the.boarf, and the committee
on county farm were directed to pro
cure same for use on said county
farm.
The committee on supplies and pub
lic property to whom was referred
the communication of County Attorney
Hensley with reference to the purchas

To the Honorable Board of Supervisors
of Platte County, Nebraska:
Gentlemen Your committee on
roads and bridegs to whom was re
ferred tne matter of submitting plans
and specifications for the building of
bridges in Platte countv, Not-aska. for
the ensuing year, respectfully report
We recommend that adoption of
plans and specifications now on file
in the office of the County Clerk,
copies of which are hereto attached
and made a part hereof, for the build
ing and fully completing of all county
bridges for the ensuing year, and we
hereby recommend that the county
clerk be directed to advertise for bids
on said plans and specifications, bids
to be lineal foot. We also recommend
that all bidders be requested to spec
ify the time required by them for the
completion of said bridges. This ap
plies to all bridges ordered within one
year from date of said contract, anu
we also recommend that all the old
bridge material be taken out and
placed upon the bank.
We further recornmend that the suc
cessful bidder be required to give good
and sufficient bond in the sum of $5,
000.00 for the faithful performance of
the conditions of his contract for
erecting, building, constructing and
completing all the bridges that may be
ordered by said county.
We also recommend that the county
board reserve the right to reject anv
or all bids, and that all bids bo filed
with the county clerk on or before
noon, March 1. 1909.

To the Honorable Board of Supervisors
of Platte County, Nebraska:
Gentlemen Section 2, Chapter 70.
Subdivision 7, Complete Statutes of
Nebraska for 1907. fixes tjie minimum
compensation of county superintend
ents in counties having a school popu
lation of 4.000 and more, at not less
than $1,200.00. As the school popu
lation of Platte countv exceeds 4.000.
It is necessary to consider other parts
of said section.
L'nder this section of the statute, as
applied to Platte county, the com
pensation of the superintendent of
schools cannot be less than $1,200.00
per annum.
The school population or this countv
being in excels or 4.oo. the board may
nx sucn compensation in any sum
above $1,200.00 per annum as in their
judgment would bo just and equitable,
taking into consideration the number
of school districts and school popula
tion in the county, and such other
circumstances necessarily incident to
the work required of a superintendent

Sheriff, asking the board for a deputy
for the year 1909. was now read and.
on motion of Supervisor Smith, the
request was granted.
Moved by Supervisor Schwarz that
the salary of the Deputy Sheriff be
fixed by teh board at the sum of $60.00
per month. Motion carried.
The following was offered by Su
