A 1222 ot The new lighting plant installed in the Meridian hotel last week by the propri etor, C. F. Todenhoft, is proving to be an economy. The power is furnished by a three-horse gasoline engine. Every room in the hotel is lighted by electric ity. Miss Josie Balsley of Lincoln was colled to Genoa Monday by a telegram announcing the de-ith of her niece, little Marcia Ball, aged ten years. The child was smothered while playing in a bin of corn on the Kent ranch, of which her father, Ora Ball, has been manager for a number of years. Albert Rasmussen left Saturday night for Lindsay, where he will enter the mercantile business with Valdimur Lau essen, of St. Edward. Last Wednesday while Mrs. Brad boll was a gnest at the Hauge Yates wedding reception she was arrested and compelled to tro before justice Koipetz, charged with stealing a band uniform. It seems that tbe uniforms are the property of the town and one of them was in the possession of Paul B rod boll, and the town authorities took this means of regaining posses sion of it before tbe removal of the Brodboll family to University Place. Liindsay Opinon. H. C. Kiester seems to enjoy collect ing newspapers of ancient date. He has in possession a real copy of the Ulster County Gazette which contains an ac count of George Washington's funeral Last week lie submitted a re-print copy of ihe Boston News Letter to the writer. The re-print copy has been in his pos session for thirty jears. The Boston Letter was the first new.-paper pu blished in the United States and was published by the postmaster at Boston. The State Teachers Reading Circle Board met iu Omaha last Saturday, and after a spirited c mtest between the lepresentatives of toine of the largest book houses of the country adopted as the book for next year "The Esssntials of Teaching Read ing", by Superintendent E B. Sher man of Colnmbus and A. A. Reed of Superior. This is the first Nebraska book ever adopted, and it reflects con siderable credit on the authors. The book,was adopted while still in manu script. It is being publihsed by. the University Publishing Co, of Lincoln. It will be a 250 page Smo and will re tail at $1.00. A handful of people witnessed the best ministrel show last Thursday night that has ever been seen ai the North. Manager Rickaby proved his mettle as a gentleman by giving the entertainment in full, although he said it was the smallest house the West Miuistrels hud ever played to. The musical features of the enrertaimnent were first-class and the acrobatic features were unique. In fact there was not a weak point in the whole performance. While Manager Ricknby declared that he would never stop in Columbus again, it i. certain that should he do so. he could pack the house. Wednes day Dr W S Evans came up from Columbus and a thoro examintion of the patient was made while be wa under the influence of anestheties, and it was found that the right hip wab fractured at (he joint, the worst place in tbe body to break bone.".
