Journal readers will be interested in the Stat Journal's article which tells of the discovery of L. H. Jewell's body. "What Ik believed to be the body of Lather H. Jewell was found near Liano, Mexico, in an abandoned mine with the Elcnll crashed. Mr. Jewell was a brother of Ool. Fred Jewell of San Dingo. Oal . formerly private secretary to Governor Poynter of Ne baska. Mr Jewell had often visited friends in Nebraska. He disappeared lat May while on a mining expedi tion and it is believed he wbb killed by a robber. He had a larce amount of money and a gold nuegntt worth f500 in his nopsession at the time of his disappearnce. The San Diego Union of September 12 contains the following account of the discovery of the body: Tho body of Anther H. Jewell, lato of this city, was lonnd in in abandoned mine near Liano, Mexi co. Saturday, near whero he was last seen alive, about the lirst of last May. The sknll was fractnred and the clothes were ridled. giving every evi dence that Mr. Jewell had been mur dered and robbed. Colonel Fred Jew ell of this city, a brother of the long missing mau, recjivtd a telegram last night that the .identificatisns of tb? remains was complete. Lather H. Jewell was last seen near Liano on May 2, w th a large amount of cash and a gold nugget worth 100 on his person. Toe location ot the body, six miles from Liano, indicates that he nad not traveled a day before he was murdered,. Tne missing man was known to have money with him, bo it is not improbable that he was followed from Liiano. He was on a mining trip. After his disappearance it was suspected that the body might be in one of the old shafts but tbete are so many of these around Liano that it was a hopeless task to search them all. Colonel Jewell offered $MK) for the recovery of the body of his brother. Saturday H. G Glore and P. Barnes came upon the body by the merest , chance. Tney are metallur gists and were making a tour of the Liano mines. Tney found tho body partly dceouipostd and with tbetkull crashed by some heavv instrument. They at once carried the news of their find to the village, and were told that the bodv was probably that of the missing San Diegan. A telegram was diBpan.bc d to Col Jewell, via Nogales, Atizona. This message reached Col. Jewell Sunday night. The parties m sending it weie un known to him, so be decided to take steps fur a positive idenri Ovation bo fore taking any action. He wired to M. K. Hopwood. a Southern Pacific conductor who knew Lnther Jewell well, also Robert Tovey, a former employe of the latter, to go from No gales to Liano to see the body. These men were familiar with certain pecu liarities of the misting man, especial ly regarding his teeth. Mr. Jewell had retained one of his first eye teeth and the other had dropped out with out another taking its place. The gold fillings were abo such as would sake identification easy. . If these men have identified the body Col. Jewell will have it shipped here for interment On the other hand, if they say it is not the body of Lnther H. Jewell, their word will be taken as final. But if the body is in such a condition that they are unable to decide one way or another regard ing it. Ool. Jewell will make a trip to Liaao to investigate the matter himself. He feels practically satis fied, however that his brother's re main have been found. Lather H. CeweU left a wife pna eon, bath of whom are living at the Helix at Fifth and A streets. The wife is Mrs. Olive Jewell, and the oa E. W. Jewell, is cashier at the Iiis theater. Dr.E.tl.Naumann DENTIST Has one of thv best dental otiiccs in the state. Leavy Takes Examination. ThlrteenPlatte county teachers, in-cludinirL.H.Leavy,GountySuperinten- dent, took the teacners examination at tho court house last Saturday. The examination was conducted by Superintendent E. 13. Sherman of the Columous schools, who is one or tne three stato examiners. Under the new law the questions are sent out sealed from the office of the state superin tendent and net opened until the morning of the examination. This is to prevent collusion between the county superintendent and any favor ire teacher and to prevent any d's liouebt teacher from gaining access to the questions before the examination. After the questions are answered they are sent to the slate board or examiners to mark. In this case the answers passed directly to Superin tendent Sherman to mark. Com menting on his taking this examin ation, Superintendent Leavy said to the editor of the Journal: "I Eat down with my teachers and took the examination for a first grade certifi cate. It was not necessary, as the state superintendent has written me that under the ruling of his depart ment, he will honor the certificate which I gave to myself last June for two years yet. I simply want to prove that I can pass the examination 1 have passed examinations before under Moncrief Tedro and Boihlei-ner." We Want You... To look over our fine line of Holiday Goods. Two Good Entertainments Columbus people have given most liberal patronage to two attractions at tho North Opera house within the last week and the attractions both merited the patronage. " Under Southern Skies last Satur day night was a pretty and a pore drama made affective by clever acting and good staging. "Liberty Belles." Tuesday night was a real treat to lovers of musical comedy of the radical type. Pretty girls, gay costumes, catchy music and good acting combind to make the per formance one of the best of ita class ever seen in Columbus. The Journal predicted at tho beginning of this sea son that North Opera house would attract crowds of out-of-town people from the branch towns if Manager Saley would establish a reputation for nothing but first class plays.
