We are xlad to report that Alvin
Hansen has returned from the hospital
at Cpnncil Bluffs almost well. Some
four weeks ago ho was taken there ill
of appendicitis and Dr. A. P. Condon
operated npon him and kept him un
der his care d urine the past few weeks.
Mi. Hansen will be r.ble to attend to
his nsnal duties within a few days.
.Wednesday, W. II. Carleton went
to Howelis and closed up the general
store of Charles Karuick under chattel
Mortgage. The creditors were whole
cmle houses of Lincoln and eastern
.cities. Mr. Carleton left the stock in
charge of Glenn 1. l?entv, of this
place who will tako i-aro of it until
, other arrangements are made.

morning arrested five men for seining.
The men pleaded guilty and were

Mrs. H. M. Little and dunehtor
Helen left Monday whero they visited
a couple of days and then started for
Portland, Oregon, to spend tho summer
in tho Lewis ami Clark exposition.
Mrs. R. P.Drake entertained a num
lor of her friends in honor of her
mother, Mrs. Henderson, who that day
celebrated her seventy-eight birthday.
Mrs. Henderson although not in good
health, still takes a keen interest in
all the happonines of tho day acd
thoroughly enjoyed tho social after
noon with her friends. Sho received
a number of gifts of flowers and other
tokens from tho ladies present, who
heartily wished her many more happy
birthdays.
The ball game at Platto Center last
Sun lay between that town and Hum
phrey resulted in a victory for Hum
phrey in a score of Utoll. Quito a
large delegation from hero went down
to witness tho game. A return game
will be played in the Humphrey dia
mond nest Sunday.
Mrs. W. M. Condon and daughter
Nora, returned Monday noon from
Rochestei. Minn., where they went
a rouplo rf weeks ago to visit Tbos.
Oltis, Mrs. Condon's father, who is
there in a hospital recovering fron an
operation. Mn. Condon reports Mr.
Ottis getting along fine and he will
be able to rotnrn home in a short t'me.
Mrs. John Heinen went to Merny
hospital at Council Bluffs last Sunday
where on Monday tho submitted to
an operaton for gall stones. The
operation was highly successful anu
tho patient is recovering in a very
satisfactory manner. Dr. A. P. Con
don performed the operation. Dr.
Gadbois accompanied Mrs. Hainan to
the hospital.
Mrs. Henry Geitzen kept open
house last Friday evening in honor of
a night blooming cerens which had
blossomed that evening and many took
advanugu of the occasion to see this
rare flower. This plant is one of the
uncaiulv cactus family noted for tho
exquisite beauty of its tlowcrs and it
is said to bloom but onco in ten years
ami that at night, so tho moment is
eagerly watched for by thoso fortu
nate enough to own a plant.

have reached Europo safe, and are
now enjoying their visit.
At the special election Wednesday,
tho bond proposition carried by a vote
of 411 to 87 which gave tho required
two-thirds majority. Tho bond will
bo issued as soon as practicable and
undoubtedly tho now school building
will bn completed by Thanksgiving
Day. For St. Edward to crraduato a
class of cloven from its high school
and voto f 10.000 bonds on the same day
is certainly a victory for tho up-build
ing of tho town.
Robert Hardy died at his home in
South Bend, Ind., Sunday after an
illness of two doys. Mr. Hardy wa
one of tho earliest settlors in Boone
county, coming here before tho Paw
nee. Indians had been removed from
their reservation south of St. Edward
and taken to Indian Territory. He
played a prominent part in tho early
history of St. Edward and was a uni
versal favorite atneng our people.
For a number of years ho has been
making his homo with a daughter. Mrs
Robert lngersoll. at South Bend. In
diana. BenJobnson. nbout a mile and a half
east of St. Edward, was killed by
lightning, Wednesday evening about
7 o'clock. The destructive bolt struck
tho roof of tho homo and passing
through the window struck Mr. John
son in the left arm and side end ran
down to tho floor tearing both shoes
from his feet. At the snmo time an
other bolt struck tho front v-randa
where Mr. Johnson's four little ch:id
ren had gone to watch tho storm. The
veranda was badly damaged and the
children wore shocked and rendered
nnsconscious for some time. A phys
ician was telephoned for at onco who
found that Mr. Johnson's case death
had been almost instantaneous. AH
bur one of the childern havo fully re
covered from the shock. Consider
able damage was done the house,
amounting perhaps to 150.

Mr. and Mrs. Heury Young, John
Hodge and F. D. Goodwin departed
Wednesday for tho Pacific coast. They
expect to take in California, Orgeon
and the Portland exposition before
they return to God's country again.
And now comes the announcement
of a Hour trur-t in Nebraska which has
been controlling the price ot flour for
tho past year or so. It is claimed that
tho Nebraska mills are in combine for
the purpose of maintaining a high
price for their products without re
gard to the price of grain, nnd flour
can bo bought in Genoa today cheaper
than in nny town in this section of
tho state owing to the fact that E M.
Spear Co. , were able to ship in Min
nesota flour for about twenty cents
per sack cheaper than the Nebraska
made brands which compelled the
combine to meet their prices hore.
Every mill in the state, it is claimed,
was compelled to enter the combine
in order to protect themselves against
throat cutting - competition which
would haje pre vented them marketing

located at Scbuvler with a branch

We do feverishly pray that the
street commissioner get n movo on
himself and fix up the side walks. Fix
them, for heaven's sake, and cause the
alleys td be cleaned. Make the town
look like the habitation of civilized
beings rather than of savages.
Some day a stray lamb will be found
on the tracks, an anxious mother will
wait in vain for the return of her erst
while son. A boy will have a life
long regret, or a rosewood casket, and
a physician will be depositing money
easily gained as a result of the efforts
of boys who onght to prsses common
sense sufficient to teach them the dan
ger of jumping on and off moving
trains. It is high time to put a stop
to such actions in this village. The
mnrshai should see to it that boys
jumping on trains should be severely
punished. Otherwise, it will only be
u question of time till some one of

of Selma, the ten year old daughter
