BANK ROBBER
SHOT CASHIER
BERNARD SCHR0EDER A VICTIM
New Lying is Critical ComdiUam with
Little Hope ef Life-Bandit
Gets Netkimg-Saspeets
Uaeer Arrest.
This city was shocked just after
noon today by the news that B H.
Schroeder, cashier of the Platte Cen
ter bans, had been fatally 6bot by a
bank robber.
The best information that could be
obtained by telephone was to the
effect that a young man of Flight
build entered the bank just after noon
when Mr. Schroeder was alone in the
front part of the bank and asked him
to throw up his hands. Schroeder in
htsad of throwing np bis hands, reach
ed for his gun when the robber fired,
the bullet entering Schroeder's breast
Win. Schelp, bookkeeper in the bank,
who was working in the back room,
heard the phot and divining that somo
thing was wrong, rushed to the door
and gave the alarm. This frightened
the robber who left the bank with
out taking any money. He monnted a
bay horse which be had hitched in
front of the bank and made his escape
toward Oconee, iiring two shots at
Diodrich Harms and others who had
been called niton the scene by the
cries of Schelp.
A large posso was quickly organized
in Platte County who started in hot
pursuit. At the same time altont
twenty-five men, including Sheriff
Carrig left Coin in bus, some going di
reetlv to Oconee and others going in
the direction of Platte Center.
Howard Clark, president of the
Platte Center bank started in an auto
mobile for Platte Center ai soon as
the sews of the attempted robbery
reached him, taking with him Dr.

Evans to care for the woended man
Mr. Schroeder. and Sheriff Carrig.
About two o'clock the Journal re
ceived a special telephone message
from Oconee saying that one Wm.
Holden. who bad left Oconee at about
ten o'clock this morning and had re-
tnvnoil aknnf nA Vlrtflr YlflflAI CDS
1 picioui circumstances had been arrest
ed while making his way soutn to
ward the heavy timber along the Lonp
river. It was said also that another
man nnder suspicion was surrounded
in a corn field by another crowd and
was being carefully guarded there
until the man under arrest conld
bo taken to. Plate Center for identi
fication. A late message from Platte Center
says that Mr. Schroeder had revived
sufficiently to positively identify
Holden r.i the guilty party and that
the prisoner is being brought to Co
lumbus by Sheriff Carrig.
The prisoner is a young man from
Lansing, Michigan who has been work
ing in the sugar beet fields near Oconee
all summer. He is said to have made
nnmerons inquiries recently about the
amount of money in the Platto Cen
ter bank. And this morning he
borrowed a horse from a farmer at
Oconee, saying that he was going
hunting. It was observed, however
that he did not carry a gun.
Ah we go to press, Mr. Schroeder ia
reported to be in a very critical con
dition. The bullet bit the top bntton
01 his coat and glanced to the right,
entering his breast just above his heart.
At five o'clock the doctors have
probed for the ball and fonnd it. Mr.
Schroeder inuy be brought to the hospital.
The Poultry Show.
According to the statements of W.
H. Swartsley, the exhibition of the
Platte County Poultry and Pet Stock
Association, which will be held in
the armorv building from November
31) till December 3, will be one of
the beet ever held, not only in Platte
county. but in Nebraska
Entries are coming in from towns
all over Nebraska, Fremont exhibitors
alone applying for fifty feet of floor
space. In fact, it is donbtfnl whether
tare will be sufficient floor space to
accomodate all.
The poultry business of the United
States rnns into millions. The hen
has lifted many a mortsaee from
Platte county farms. Thousands of
dollars are paid annually to the pro
ducers of poultry in Platte county.
The industry is rapidly increasing
here, and nothing is giving such im
petus to that industry as the excellent
work of the enthusiastic members of
the Paltte County Poultry and Pet
stock Association.
These Members are raising birds as
good as aay in the world.
To be convinced of these facto, the
citizens of Platte county should all
attend the exhibit ion and see onr home
fowls placed alongside of some of the
winners of prizes at the St. Louis ex
hibition, which, wo are informend,
will be here.
Every thoroughbred bird in Platte
county increases the productive wealth
of Platte county. Every exhibition
of the best birds induces a hundred
farmers to increase their tloks by
calling their attention to the possible
profits within their reach.
The more the farm produces, the
more the business lor the merchant.
The poultry show which we ore soon
to have is therefore a thing in which
all are interested. Encourage it.
