It is not very often in the history of Nebraska that it has made much differ- ence whom the democracy nominated for the supreme court, but as it is now becoming more or less interesting, we clip the following for Journal readers from the Fremont Herald, which is nothing at all, if not democratic: "Commenting upon our suggestion of the name of Judge Broady for the su preme bench, the Papillion Times says, "Such talk as the above is calculated to make democrats young again. The Times loves Judge Broady as a man, and recognizes his acknowledged ability, but we believe that Senator Gondring, of Platte county, would be about the proper pattern for a democratic Moses this fall." All right in every way, except that Platte county has already one of the three members of the supreme bench (Sullivan) for four or five years to come. The southern and eastern portion of the state has no representation and has not had on the bench for years, and by reason of fitness and location Judge Broady's name we believe to be the beet that can be suggested. Furthermore, the Columbus Telegram, published at Senator Gondring's home, announces the ultimatum "that Platte county is entitled to one of the places on the judicial ticket" in this district, which it can hardly expect with fusion nomin ations (naturally HoUonbeck and Grimi son.) We are satisfied that Platte coun ty doesn't want the earth. Is Platte county for more fusion, or not, after re ligiously scanning the returns, "before and after taking?" Populism. The party of fusion, populism and con fusion in Nebraska and throughout the United States is made up, as a rule, of apostates from the principles of good government and common sense who have become the idolators of rotund rant and vociferation. Declamation and elocution are the motors of the populist organization and never since the world began has so much machinery been run by wind. Thought, argument, analysis and logical methods are as foreign to the expedients of populism as January is in daily temperature from July. Nebraska more than any other state in the Union has been privileged to observe the utter in capacity of the leaders of the fusionists for useful and practical reforms in either local or state government. Officers and emoluments for the few; taxation, vex ation, agitation and irritation for the many only that and nothing more. No capability except for blunders, no ability except for public funds. Con servative. Chancellor MacLkan has decided to accept a call to the university of Iowa. Several reasons are assigned for this, two of the prominent ones being that tho Iowa salary is S7.000. the Nebraska $5,000; the other that his action is due I mainly to the annoyances and persecu tions of a coterie of populist politicians. It seems that the chancellor was instru mental in compelling H. K. Wolfe (son of Uncle Jake), to quit mixing socialism with his philosophical teachings as a professor and finally to step down and out, and ever since Uncle Jake is after the chancellor. From Callaway come accounts of a cloudburst Wednesday which was a surprise to at least one farmer, who saw the water coming, seemingly five hun dred feet wide. "I have heard some very romaut stories about your successes," said tl young woman as she looked out of tb corners of her eyes and adjusted hi mouth so as to make dimples. "Yes?" responded Senator Sorgbuni with a complacent smile. "It has been intimated to me that you have made money out of politics But, of course, one doesn't havo to be lieve everything one hear a" "Well, these silver people did so bad ly when they tried to make politics out of money I dunno's a man would be t.i blame for turning the experiment tho other way around. " "And then another person told ma that you got your very first start in life as a curbstone fakir. " "That's libelous." "I thought so." "Absolutely false. The way I got my first start was this. I had a farm left me, which wasn't good for anything else, so I got it surveyed and had maps printed and opened up an office and sold the whole thing off in lots. I'm not a man of small enterprises. When I start out to do anything, I do it with a will. As soon as I made up my mind to fake I faked a whole town. I wouldn't stop with a curbstone." Washington Star. She Keat Her Aaaalataaeat. But about the foarta place Mr. Gladstone found geat difficulty. He considered that there were -fonr com petitors JEscbylns, Virgil, Milton and Goethe. We wonder how many of oar readers would at a first guess select Mr. Gladstone's final choice? It was Goethe. Who, in recent days, nave been the greatest masters of English? This was another question which Mr. Gladstone was fond of considering. He decided in favor of two as greater than all others Cardinal Newman and Mr. Buskin. It is interesting to recall the fact that Mr. Morley, in a lecture, answered the same question. According to him, the great masters of English in oar generation have been three Carlyle. Maoaulay and Mr. Buskin. The last named alone appears, it will be seen, in both lists. London News. Life's Chaaa-es. " 'Thirty at Maaila, Mast af Will 1U Ust. Saturday morning, the governor is- I sailAfl Ka aVtllraWBnr tAAlamuliAi Lincoln, July 1. The executive office is just in receipt of advices that the First Nebraska has this day sailed from Manila. The home-coming of this gal lant regiment is such a notable event in the history of our state as to call for official recognition and for such a dem onstration of welcome upon their return as will fitly commemorate their splendid courage and fortitude. As chief executive of tho state, and in obedience to tho dictates of my own feelings, I recommend that the warm welcome which the j.o have already prepared in their heurts for our-return-ing heroes shall take shape in an organ ized and concerted movement and that such a demonstration be arranged as will give ample proof to the world that Nebraska appreciates her noble sons who have by their valorous deeds made her name famous throughout the world. In testimony whereof I hereunto cet my hand and cause to be affixed the great seal of the state of Nebraska. Done at Lincoln this first day of July, A. D. 1899. By the governor, W. A. Poynter. W. F. Porter, Secretary of State. The state officials will not take aides as to whether the reception will be held at Omaha or Lincoln. The regimental colors will be delivered to the state in Lincoln. The sailing of the Hancock from Ma nila Saturday with tho First Nebraska and the Utah troops on board, was un confirmed Sunday at Washington, but is thought to be authentic because the vessel had been ballasted. It had taken a number of days for this. Coal for ballast has to be carried on shipboard on the heads of natives, many of whom are women, and it is slow work. The Nebraska regiment, according to the government records, leads all the rest in the service, having participated in twenty-nine pitched battles and lost twenty-nine men killed and 160 wound ed. Of 1200 men who went to Manila about a year ago but 740 are returning home. Twenty-four days is the time supposed necessary for the trip. A model camp has been prepared and it is thought the regiment will remain at San Francisco about two weeks, reaching Nebraska not later than the middle of August. A Xejoinder. Editor Journal: I do not desire carrying on a controversy with my good, well-fed friend George Bnrnutn. But one or two points in his last letter can not be passed by without a word. Your readers will certainly pardon this reply. They are scattered over the earth, even in remote regions, and while they may not be particularly pleased, or edified, some of them at least may be interested. George has substantially admitted all that was contended for, that with Ne braska's many grand features there are occasionally a few features mixed in that are not so delightfully grand. So it may be said of California or any habi tation this side of the one eternal in the heavens whence no traveler returneth to give it a black eye. So far, drouth or no drouth, California has sent no committees east for bread or raiment Orange suckers and rose smellers man age to get along without doing that, even if George has not been "blown away or missed a meal." But the poor stock. How unmercifully a blizzard uses cattle as to regular rations. Of course, if the owner has a rope long enough and plenty of clothing, stock won't suffer, that is, if hay and grain have not been "shorted" by the elements, and shelter is provided. Cattle often have short feed in California but they don't feed at the end of ropes. We use rope very differently when we use it at all. Some of the 116,000 undertakers in Los Angeles know how it is done. And they have 365 days annually to do what is undertaken. No hihernating, ground hog style for them. My trip north, George, has been one of purely a business nature. Nebrss kans up this way are all right, too. Some day I intend again tackling one of those "best meals on earth" in Colum bus. Please notify the grasshoppers and all other natural enemies of this purpose. They will do well to keep away. Too many calamities at a time are often very disastrous. One at a time they can be better endured. W. W. Burgess. Seattle, Wash., 6, 28. Veely-Bowwa Wedding. The Omaha World-Herald of the 29th has this paragraph concerning an im portant event in the life of a yonng lady, a former resident here, and whose multitude of friends will wish her joy in her new life relations: John N.
