The story is told by a "corre- spondent of the Chicago Chronicle in Anderson, Ind. .Howard Lewis, a fann er Hvingfour miles Treat of the city, in the neighborhood of the dismal swamp, made famous for years by its snakes, was out, In the fields working. His father-in-law was with him. They ran onto a monster reptile while at wcrk and his snakeshlp was most ag gressive from that on until he was laid cut dead, by the two men. They no ticed his remarkable points and dragged blm home with them to substantiate the story which they give. The authorities en snakes are puxxled in placing this one and the indications are that they will not be able to find a place for faint in the snake column. He Was twelve feet three inches long and among hi other remarkable points had a pair of wings and three horns. His head' was long and flat and set with a solitary eye In the very center. On each side or this was a horn three Inches in length, carving in. , They were solid and .well pointed. Back of the eye, in the center of the head, was a third horn extending back like that of the rhi noceros. His snakeshlp tapered to each ?nd. In the broadest place he. was eight inches In diameter when lying dead, while in life he was probably larger. Ills tall was fashioned after that of a ewordfish, and in the very center of his body, where he was the broadest, was a perfectly formed 'pair of wings, rather small in comparison with his other points, but wings for all that It is net known what use he had for these. He was of a dark color, but his extraor dinary tail was set with spots ot bril liant green and an occasional stripe ran from his head to his tail. Farmers at tribute the loss of all live stock, from a pig to a horse, to the reptile, so awe inspiring was he. A MYSTERIOUS SPRINQ. It lias Tire Surfaces and Oaa Uai arnand Inlot sad X Outlet. From the New York Sun: "There isn't much to say about the little village of Toy, up in Wayne county," said a citi zen of that quiet hamlet in the pepper mint belt, "except that just outside of it !s a spring which is undoubtedly un like any other spring in the world. That spring hasn't any visible outlet, but it has two very visible inlets, thus re versing the natural order of springs. Springs ara usually the sources ot streams. That one is just the oposite. One of the inlets of the spring Is a rlverlet that flows, from the south. The other comes from tto north. The waters that come from the north and empty into the spring are as clear as crystal. The waters of the stream that discharge from the south are almost as black as ink. 'The southern inlet never freezes, while the northern one is the flrnt water in -ail that region to freeze. Another singular thing about this Hiring is that although no water flows from it water is constantly boiling up tbrcugh the white sand that forms its bed. The spring Is only two feet wide nnd three feet deep, "but a force pump worked steadily and rapidly in It for hears has failed to decrease its water -suppiy In the slightest degree. The mystery is, whet becomes of the water of the spring? Fed by two streams, and from an underground source, and with no outlet, this spring has been 1 thing impossible 'to explain from'tbe time the original settlers squatted in that part of the state and found it there until now." We've beea too busy since to think whether or not we would keep them. It was an exceedingly simple operar tion.polite and bloodless. The Charles ton and the transports she wascon voying sailed in to the harbor of Agana and fired a few shots at a crumbling old fort The Spanish governor of the islandB, bearing the guns and seeing the big ships, promptly put oft in a boat with bis governmental staff. They were jubilant at the prospect of Un limited food and "booze," and came over the side bowing and scraping. The governor with true Cast ii Ian flourish es regretted, in fact, was bowed to the earth with shame and remorse, that his unworthy self bad not powder to return the salute of his excellency the most noble and esteemed Americano s com mander, but the islands and ail that they contained wore at his.escellency'a service. It seemed rather crual after, that to Inform the polite governor that war existed between'tbc United States and Spain, and that he. and his suite were prisoners of war. but It had to.ba done, and the'bountiful wardroom ta ble and the supplies cf the wine mess soon consoled the captives for the losi of their little island sovareignty. Then the hundred men composing the Span ish army in the Ladiones were gath ered in, he American flag hoisted, an American resident appointed governor, and the Charleston and the transports sailed away, leaving a small guard of soldiers to keep order. Magellan called the Ladrones the Isles of the Thieves (in Spanish, Las Is las dc los Ladrones) when he discov ered them In 1520, because of the na tives' persistent pilfering, and though since they were rechristened the Ma rianne Islands, in honor of Queen Ma ria Anna, who lived ia the seventeenth century, the first name has stuck, and Ladrones has remained their title to this day. Magellan and his men were almost dead from thirst and hunger when they landed on the islands, having been more than three months without sight ing land or taking on food or water. But the natives, who had never before received a visit from the outside world, not even from the many islands of the Pacific, were extremely hospitable and relieved the material wants of" the Spaniards with the greatest liberality. Literally every wish of the visitors wa3 gratified, and for a time Magellan be lieved he had discovered a race of peo ple whose only impulses were good, and a great friendliness sprang up be tween his men and the natives. They were made welcome on board all hours of the day and night, while the sailors from the ships were treated to all sorts of free entertainments on shore. So entirely cordial were the re lations between visitors and hosts that no one thought of thievery, when all &bv&e- r HIN- - s Vmim .. And bring in tensely superstitious, like all Spaniards of the sixteenth century, Magel-an and his men concluded that the islands roust be under the spell of the evil ons; In short, that the devil was spiriting away axes and knives and even guns. As the swimmer glided through the water he encountered an unsually itcavy wave, through which he dived with all the ease and grace of an am phibian. Later investigation showed all the natives to be of extraordinary skill as piirerers. Moreover, they had remarkable control over their feet and could pick all sorts of articles up from the deck with their toes almost as ex pertly as with their bands. Magellan did all he could to teach them the meaning of "mine" and "thine," but without the smallest succecs. No amount cf watchfulness could prevent them from stealing, and so, though all hands desired to remain at the place where every pleasure of the senses could be had for the asking, the- an chors were coon lifted and the fleet sailed away. It may be worth men tioning incidentally that Magellan went from the Ladrones to the Philippines, where he was killed in a fisht with the natives. Happy reacafol Inlanders. Leaving their propensity to steal aside, the islanders, as Magellan found them, were exceptionally moral and well-behaved, at least from the South Sea point of view. Murder was vir tually unheard of. Fighting was ex tremely rare. And, as they knew no other people, tribe or nation, there were no wars. Their lives were simple, but full of ease and sensual pleasure and their physical development was excellent, the men being straight and well-made, while, again from the South Sea point of view, the women were of an unusual comeliness, which added charm to their almost universal good nature. Speaking again, with the South Sea point of view in mind, the Ladione islands were little else in the sixteenth century than a wave-girt earthly paradise. Nature unassisted furnished all the necessaries cf i!fe and almcst all the luxuries of which the islanders had knowledge be sides. AH sorts cf food were to be had for the gathering, since the eating cf anything save fruits and vegetables had nver been heard of. The shelter cf a lifetime could he put up by a r?w hours of labor; the scanty clothing required by their simple convention alities occupied little time in making; bright-hued shells for pe-sonal adorn ment were everywhere atrewn upon the teach. No one had to spend time mak ing killing tools of every kind, none being needed in th? absence cf war, and the non-tire of animal food. Naturally In these circumstances, the development of the islanders in many ways v.-as far belcw that of other South Sea natives, but they had a religion much resembling the Shintoism of Chi naand observed iia forni3 with great rpre, while their language was unusu ally strong and sonorous when com pared with those cf the other islands in the Pacific. Then every one -in the house sits around and watches to see which candle burns out first. If the wife's does so the Husband has a right to divorce her, even against her will, and turn her and her relations out of his house without more ado.
