WEDNESDAY. NOVEMBEBS. 1W1. Ths next republican national conven-1 tkm will be held at Minneapolis. The American hog is now fitly styled, the modern conquering hero of Europe. A ikbbifio and destructive wind torm Monday in New York, Penn.. nor thern Ohio, Virginia and Mississippi. A aKKx deal of credit is due to White law Beid, our minister to France, for the recognition of the American hog in that country. WrLUAX J. Fuokencb, the actor, died .f Ran nVlnnlr on the evening of the 19th inst at the Continental hotel, Phil adelphia, of pneumonia. Ax alliance between France and Rus sia is regarded as almost an accomplish ed fact, and it may mean a very great deal in the twists and turns of European politics the next few months or years. Joxy H. Sntdkb, a traveling man, was found almost dead at a hotel in Sioux City, from a dose of morphine. Ho left a letter stating that he desired to die be cause be was afflicted with locomotor ataxin, and was out of employment. Sekator M&kdkbson is credited with saying to a reporter of the Washington Post that the present silver law was generally acceptable, and that it pro vides for the purchase by the govern ment of substantially all the silver produced in this country. Tuesday evening of last week, St. liomB,Mo., had a fire that destroyed $1,000,000 worth ot business property. One lifo was probably lost, and four per- . sons injured by the fire. Mike Conners jumped from a third story window, and has life was only saved by his fall being ' broken by electric wires. The more decent people of Creeton, la, have concluded from some recent developments, that the moral atmos phere of their city would bo pnrer if it was not contaminated by houses ot ill fame, and it is recorded that the author ities purpose to drive out all the keep en and inmates of bawdy houses. Enqinxeb Matnabd, of the Burling ton, forgot his orders Thursday after noon, and the result was a head end col lision between two passenger trains, four miles east of Seward. Maynard fled through a cornfield, but shortly turned mp at Seward and said that none could be blamed but himself for the accident. A Bumber were badly injured and the many escapee from death were truly Btiraculous. The engines are total wrecks and were firmly wedged to gether. Most of the sixty-six democratic congressmen from New York, New Jer sey, Pennsylvania and Ohio are opposed to free silver. Nearly all of the fifty democrats of the states ot the northwest are in favor of free silver, while the Pacific states have only two. democrats aad they are free silver men. The south has one hundred and nine demo crat and eight alliance men who will go into the democratic caucus. So no matter what kind of a man is selected aa speaker, there is sure to be fun ahead for the opposition, and inharmony, to call it by no harsher name, among the democrats. SacKETAST of the treasury, Hon. Chas. Foster, made the speech of the evening, at the 123d annual dinner of the Cham ber of Commerce of the state of New York, one night last week, his subject bging, To Maintain the Parity Between Gold and Silver, is the Fixed Policy of the Government." He said that the doleful predictions of those who thought the coinage ot silver would bring disas ter to the country had not been realized, notwithstanding the fact that $400,000, 000 have been coined in fifteen years, and $70,000,000 worth of silver bullion pur chased in gold value and paid for by the issue of $70,000,000 of new treasury notes aad still the parity is maintained and it ie bow agreed on all sides that gold alone furnishes too narrow a basis upon which to build the world's financial structure. Amoso the reported facta which led to the universal belief expressed in Europ ean journals hut week that Russia wants war to divert attention from internal disorders, are the following: that Russia has ordered a reinforcement f 40,000 troops to be dispatched to the frontier; that tbe government ammuni tion factories have been -set to work sight aad day; than a number of veteran regtsMata are being transferred from FialaBd; that the German war oftce has a large number of portable i to be manufactured for the use of i army corps in the event of i winter with Russia: that add- room is being provided towns along the Russia-German aad several army corps have in the military dis- would have to bear tbe of the fiat attacks from the y. Owe eaa NlttJUlmtA NOTES. Th North Bend hemp mill is MOW running fall blast. Judge F. G. Hamer will contest tbe election of his rival. There are 800,000 acres of free govern ment land in Sioux county. A vrlr Minntr farmer aold two tone of broom com tb other day for aixty-fivelW V .r !l lit WeiaenfluhX A . . 00 f dollars a ton. The oatmeal mill of Beatrice was so good a thing for its owners that they will rebuild it Gov. Thayer has appointed Gen. J. C. liVRriilA hiar insnector of grains for Lancaster county. The Oxnards have concluded to raise the price of beets for next year. That is in the right direction. Norfolk too has a ladies music club, which occasionally gives an open concert to which they invite their friends. The diphtheria . epidemic has again broken out in Lincoln. There were fourteen deaths from the disease in the last four weeks. Jim Talbot, while attempting to kill a hog for the Enterprise meat market last week, was badly bitten in the hand by I the animal. He failed to kill the hog. The running ice in the river at Plattsmouth blockaded the ferry for two days and teamsters desirous of crossing had to drive to Nebraska City and use the bridge. "Undo Jimmy" Cannon and Capt O'Donohue, two of the leaders of the mob that lynched the negro, Smith, on Oct. 9, were discharged from custody last week. George H. Roberts, who waa att'y gen. in Nebr. from 74 to 79, died the other day in New York. He was afflicted with dipsomania, and at the time of his death was att'y gen. of Idaho. Peter Klein, a workman at the Grand Island sugar factory, waa hit by a large piece of limestone falling twenty feet it broke several of his ribs, causing other injuries which may prove fatal. A son of Lash Halmeson, Newman Grove, waa instantly killed while assist ing his father to lower an iron pump into its place. The tube fell, striking the boy on the head, mashing his body into a pulp. Joe Powell of Syracuse tried to hang himself with a sheet because "his girl went back on him," but the knot gave way and let him fall to the floor without breaking his neck, and he now knows more than he did. Henry Moeller, near Hooper, recently put down a 350 feet well that throws water over sixty feet above the surface. As Hooper is not very far away, it may be that some enterprising Platte county citizen can strike artesian water. It is worth trying at least. Thomas Eon. aged 73. ot Nebraska City, died last Tuesday from exposure and neglect. His wife died about three weeks ago, since which tune he had re fused to eat, and would not even have a fire in his house, but was trying to drown his sorrow by drink. Land on the Sioux reservation between the Niobrara and Missouri reservation west, waa opened for entry last week. Many have filed at Niobrara before the clerk of the district court and the county judge. The settlers are of the beat classes of farmers, and the land of good quality. It is probably just becoming a fact that any and every variety of crime committed will find a sample at least in Omaha. Last week a negro man by the name of Will Rose, and his wife, beat the wife's grandmother so badly that she is not expected to live, and all because she wouldn't put some of her proyerty in the husband's name. The Bee gives an incident occurring inoourt at O'Neill which tends to ex plain, according to the opinion of the reporter, the reason why Judge A. W. Critesis so unpopular. A man by the name of Ring, whose wife waa danger ously ill, asked to be excused from jury service, and Judge Kincaid, who knew the circumstances, appealed to Crites, but he refused to excuse him, and arbi trarily ordered him to appear in court, and mar possibly order his arrest. Arthur Sloan, who ahot and killed his stepfather, B. J. Baldwin, and brother, John Baldwin, Oct 1, on a farm near Fontenelle, was detected and arrested in the coal districts of Iowa, where he was at work husking corn. He is now in jail at Blair, admits the shooting, and aays he could not do otherwise. The dispute was about the removal of the family to Blair, which Sloane opposed. In the course of the quarrel he drew a revolver and fired. Mrs. Baldwin was also struck in the hip by a bullet inten ded for one of the others. The total number of visitors of the Nebraska advertising train waa 11200, the largest atone place being at Fort Wayne, Ind, 10,000. One Ohio man thought he could beat the big squash, but when the facts were known the Ohio specimen weighed but 98 as against Ne braska's 185 pounds. The Nebraska corn raised in Douglas county, was not matched anywhere. The train was a pronounced success, and great was the surprise expressed by the thousands who saw for themselves what the great state of Nebraska is able to do.
