The Argus and the Sentinel are not a unit on the government ownership of railroads. . Sekatok Josbph E. McDonald died at Indianapolis, Sunday night, at 11:35, aged 72 years. Douolas county is worth $250,000,000, and yet her valuation for revenue pur- poses is only $25,000,000. The "Holy Coat," claimed to be the seamless coat of the Savior is to be ex- hibited at Trave, Aug. 22d. .It is reported that Mrs. John A. Logan 'and Capt Geo. E. Lemon, the well known claim agent, are about to b married. . Neab Massillon, O., hundreds of acres of wheat, oats and hay were ruined by the storm Saturday. Three iron bridges on the Fort Wayne road were carried away. Iowa will have four tickets in the field this fall, republican, democratic, the people's and prohibition. The solid south are getting a good ready for next year's presidential campaign. An excursion train of fifteen cars which left Cleveland Sunday afternoon on the Nickel Plate road jumped the track near Dover, O., and seven cars were wrecked. One man was killed and more than thirty persons injured. The train was running thirty miles an hour. Bogers, the man killed, was caught in the wreck and had to be chopped out Saturday afternoon a cyclone accom panied by a deluge of rain, passed ten miles southwest of Effingham, HL, de molishing houses and barns, destroying crops, orchards, etc. The houses and barns on the farms of John Brennan and John Wiefenbach and John Good were totally demolished the implements blown a hundred yards. Brennan was fatally hurt. I General Victor Vifquain has struck an idea for Nebraska campaigners, and that is that the democracy move upon the court houses if you can't be gov ernor, be sheriff; if you can't be presi dent, be policeman. Not a bad notion, Victor, seeing that you are no longer adjutant general under Boyd. The court houses are in sight, and the squab ble is about to begin. Nebraska, out side of Platte and a few other counties, has been pretty slim picking heretofore for democracy, but now it may be better. Large drives of Texans are now mov ing northward. Word is at hand from Morgan county that several trails have passed there, and others are following in rapid succession. Every other day a herd of 2,000 to 200 passes. All told - not less than 100,000 head, it is said, will represent the drive of this season through that section. This recalls the active cattle days of the past. Most of these are one, two and three-year-old steers, and are bound for the Montana and Wyoming ranges. Omaha Stock- Nebraska City is not falling behind the procession any among the cities of this state. She has abont as many solid business men to the acre as any other city of similar area in the state. Her citizens keep their eyes well open for opportunities and the factories, packing houses, distillery and other enterprises established there in the last few years are now steady springs of prosperity which keep the little city abreast of all competitors." A $100,000 starch factory and a new wagon bridge across the Mis souri are her latest conquests. Bee. Thk southeastern corner of Kwrtw waa visited by terrific storms last Fri day night, causing some loss of life, much damage to property and enormous damage to growing crops. The storm waa of different natures at different points. At Fort Scott it took the form of .a cloudburst, at Arkansas City a cy clone and at Emporia a tornado. Its effects were the same, however, wherev , er its fury was felt Towns were flood- , ad, houses blown over, barns demolish ed, fences swept away and crops washed aad laid low. Wheat was just ready for the binder, and in some places had been ewt aad stacked. Aw capraea on the Milwaukee line treat Omaha to Chicago jumped the track at 9:40 Tuesday of last weak at the Coon river, oae-f oarth ot a of Oooa Bapids, 90 aaflas east of Cowaeil Bluffs. The engine, tender, fcaya-Bgaearandtwo passenger cars and the sleeper left the track and rolled down the embankment forty-five feet into the river. Tariff Ftetares. New York Proas: During the flrat quarter of last year the consular district of Chemnitz, in Germany, exported to woolen underwear to the amount f69,21&33. The McKinley bill increased the da ties on fine woolen underwear to pro mote their manufacture here, and during the first quarter of this year we import ad only $4704.41 of the goods from Chemnitz. Another straw from the consular dis trict of Chemnitz; whence we have been importing fine woolen products, which the McKinley bill makes dutiable at a higher figure in order to promote their manufacture here. In the first quarter ot 1890 we imported from Chemnitz flan nels to the amount of $19,128.41. During the first quarter of 1891 we im ported S2.270.83. NEBRASKA NOTES. Heavy rainfall at North Platte last week. J. M. Brineger's wagon was run into by a freight train at Belvidere, and he nearly killed Wednesday. The state organization of Daughters of Veterans met it Grand Island Friday, with twenty-five delegates present. Levi Jenkins and Lee Pryor of Madi son county got $20 the other day for ten wolf scalps. Pretty good for the boya The hardware store of J. A. Pence, Schuyler, was burglarized Friday night and knives and revolvers to the value of $55 stolen. A heavy wind and electric storm at Niobrara Tuesday of last week; blowing down small buildings, wrecking store fronts, etc Syracuse, seventeen miles from Doug las, dot-s not fear the spread of small pox from that place. A Syracuse doc tor reports three cases, well quarantined. Lizzie Stevens of Elk Creek, daughter of Peter Stevens, 10 years old, was bit ten one day last week by a rattlesnake. The wound was dressed by a physician and her recovery is hopeful. Lars Peterson of Blair mysteriously disappeared Saturday week and nothing has been heard of him since. He was last seen about 5 o'clock when he started to visit a young lady, xlis rolks are afraid he has been waylaid. He is twenty-four years old, weighs 175 pounds, light complected, light hair and wore a blue suit At the Dawes oratorical contest of Doane college Homer C. House received the first prize, Bertha B. Stull second, and Leonard A. Turner third. The judges were Bev. A. B. Gilbert of Ex eter, A. V. Storm of Clay Center, and H. S. Dungan of Hastings. On delivery, Bev. L. Gregory of Lincoln, Bev. A. S. Thain, D. D., of Omaha and C. C. White of Crete. WashiagteB Letter. From our regular correspondent. There is a manifest disposition on the part of those wild-eyed gentlemen who have been for lo these many months making monkeys of themselves by yell ing at all times and in all sorts of places that the 1st of July, 1891, would see the United States treasury bankrupt, to change their tune. The Washington correspondent of the New York Herald, who has led the grand chorus of calami ty waiters now says: "The treasury m not bankrupt, and the skill and courage of Secretary Foster will probably save it from bankruptcy." This naive admis sion from the man who has been londest in this prediction of bankruptcy has caused no little amusement here, where anyone who had the brains and who cared to make the necessary investiga tion might at any time have fully satis fied himself from the official figures that there was not the slightest danger of anything even approaching national bankruptcy. Readers of this eorrea pondence need not be told this, as it has been stated and restated therein that the U. S. treasury is all right, and will remain so as long as it is under republi can control. Representative Mills, who is now here, alleged to be engaged in literary work, but in reality trying to patch up the big holes in his speakership boom, has at last discovered that there are times when a man may talk too much, and is out in a statement over his own signa ture saying that all the so-called inter views which have been credited to him are bogus, and saying that be has not and will not express his opinion on the speakership, further than to aay that be is a candidate, and that he has not and will net express any opinion upon the merits or demerits of any candidate for the democratic nomination for the pros iuancy, all of which shows that Mr. Milla is, what the boys call badly "rattled." When Senator Quay was here a few days ago he told a friend that he would under no circumstances remain at the head of the national committee during the next campaign, although- be waa ready and willing to render tbe party all the assistance he could both before and during the campaign. Secretary Foster has decided, aa it waa thought from the beginning be would, to sustain chief Meredith, of the bureau of engraving and printing in his contro versy with the Knights of Labor, in spite of the dictatorial tactics of the leaders of that organization. A full in vestigation of the charges made against Capt Meredith, resulted in showing them to be entirely without foundation, and the seven K. of L. who were dis charged have been informed that they will not be reinstated, but if ao disposed they can make application for new ap pointments, taking the usual examina tion and their chances along with the other applicants. Secretary Foster is a dimcult man to bulldoze, aa the two members ot the K. of L. national execu tive have now discovered. Threats are never good arguments. Tbe inventors ot the country, who happen not to be provided with tat bank accounts, are to be congratulated on a new role in the patent osaoa, which, pro hibits men, who have, while examiners in that oflfce, rejected applications for pateata, afterwards appearing as attor neys or agents for these same applica tions. The absence of this rule has been the cause of more applications for pat enta being rejected which by right should have been granted than any other thing, as it is an unfortunate truth, well known to those familiar with the busi ness of the office, that some of the ex aminers, of which there are about one hundred, have for years systematically miAAtAd MQnlications entitled to be granted for the sole purpose of after wards getting an attorney's toe from tne same application allowed. This practice is now happily ended, and the credit for the reform is due to Hon. 'Charles E. Mitchell, commissioner of patents, who has proven himself to be the right man in the right place, and whose expected early retirement from office is very gen erally regretted. The president's appointments to the new private land claims court are com mended on all sides. Every one of the five judges, three republicans and two democrats, has had experience upon the bench. The new judges are J. M. Reed, of Iowa; W. F. Stone, of Colorado; H.C. Sluss, of Kansas; T. C. Fuller, of North Carolina and W. W. Murray, of Ten nessee.
