There's a good deal of

Half the time it means noth

From this it appears that the earth can

A movement is on foot to, if possible,

Ungraciousness is wholly opposed
to all our ideas of good breeding. An
ungracious person will never come up
to our standard of a true gentleman or
gentlewoman, although possibly well
born and well educated. The sensa
tion of insecurity and of being on the
look-out for some ill-judged speech dis
sipates that safe and calm atmosphere
which surrounds the trulv refined.
There h always a nervous dread of what
may come next, and a feeling of con
straint is generated. Persons who are
much in the society of the ungracious
foster insensibly a guarded carefulness
as to topics likely to call forth a show
of ungraciousness, and a cautious man
ner of feeling their way on a subject, so
to speak, very trying to those having to
practice it. Yet, with every care taken,
the feeling will appear, and almost al
ways when least expected, and on oc
casions seemingly calling for it tho
least.
One of the oldest houses on the New
Jersey coast is that of Col. Albert L.
Johnson, an ex-Confederate Kentuckian,
who, after passing the better part of bis
lifetime far inland, found leisure in ad
vancing years and came straight to the
Atlantic ooast that he might indulge a
long cherished passion for the sea. The
honso is close to the water at Bay Bidge.
When approached from the land it ap
pears to be a one-story structure set
upon a hill, but once inside one finds
that the front door is almost in the roof,
and that below that part of the house
visible from the landward side is story
after story facing the sea. In fact, the
house is built against a bluff, with only
the roof aud one story peeping above
the hill. Thus almcst every room in
the house has a sea view, and is cooled
in summer by the sea breeze. A pow
erful telescope is one equipment of the
place, and with this the owner is able to
spy out every ship entering or depart
ing from the harbor.
HI Text.
A rising young minister very absent
minded, very earnest aud very sensitive,
hurrying to church one Sunday morn
ing and going into the pulpit late, was
horrified to discover that-he had not his
carefully written sermon with him.
The service bad begun by the singing
of the anthem, but he called up one of
his neighbor's boys, and gave him hur
ried directions about his study and the
probable location of the ermon, and
sent him post-haste to get it and return
as fat as possible. The service pro
ceeded, and still the boy did not ap
pear. The young preacher was in agony.
He had never preached without notes,
and the prespiratioa stood iu great
beads on his forehead, and he wondered
what he would do if the sermon did net
come. Finally, just as the last stanza of
the hymn which preceded the sermon
was being sung the boy appeared,
rnshed up the aisle conspicuously and
handed the minister his manuscript.
The clergyman took the package nerv
ously, opened it, and during profound
stillness, announced his text. Not until
he had spoken it, did the meaning of it
Hash over him. It was this:
"Rejoice with me; for 1 have found
the piece which was lost !
This was too much for the audience.
The people laughed outright But the
lesson was a good one for the minister,
who never forgot his sermon again
while in that parish.

Last winter Col. Ingersoll gave re
ceptions to bis friends on Sunday eve
nings. His parlors were always
crowded, and the great Agnostic was
the most delightful of men. He laughed
with the girls, talked seriously with the
men, cracked a joke at the supper table,
and seemed to be as contented as man
can well be, I noticed on more than
one occasion, whenever some ill-mannered
person brought up the subject of
religion, tnat uoi. ingersoll deftly
tnrned the conversation. But upon one
memorable night that I recall, Grace
Greenwood, the authoress, turnel to
him and said familiarly, as do most of
his friends: "Bob, what do you think
of Shaksreare?" I suppose the ques
tion was prompted by a magnificent bast
of the Bard of Avon that stood on a
pedestal near by. Col. Ingersoll was
not at a loss for an answer. He walked
over to the bust, looked at the face af
fectionately, and then in a low voice be
gan a i eloquent a tribute to the great
poet as ha? ever been paid hioi. For
five minute; he poured forth his elo
quence in a low, calm voice, and whea
he looked up he found that all the men
and women in the parlors were on tip
tce eager to catch every woid that lell
from his lips. I wish I could reprcdnce
those word now, but I can't. Stw

A very diminutivo messenger boy was

The boys, taking hold of thn handles
on cither side of the box, started up tho

"Say, don't you know what it is?"
"Xaw."
"Let's look?"
"All right."
Suiting the action to their words they
set the box down again and opened it,
revealing an electric battery.
"Say, it's a shock in' machine. Try it,"
taking the handles out and giving them
to the little fellow, who held them for a

"Let me have 'em." While he was

could be heard for squares, and the boy
holding the handles appeared to be try

In a place in this town is employed a

He is a church member with a family.
IIi fellow clerks put an "ad."' iu the

Letters began to flood the mails, some

of the most gushing and confidential

others all over the country. A score or

The mail which has just arrived from
China, says the London Times, brings
news of the death, at his place atllopam:
In Canton, oi probably the wealthiest
man in China. In the history of the
foreign trade of China no name is so
celebrated as that of Howqua. For the
last forty years of Its existence ho was
the head of a unique corporation of
monopolists known as tho Co-Hong,
which was usually composed of eight
Canton merchants. His wealth was
almost fabulous. lb 1S34 he put it down
himself at over 520,000,000. In 1841,
when Sir Hugh Hough levied a ransom
Of 50,000,000 on tho city of Canton,
Howqua advanced over S1,000,000 to
the authorities. He was the leading tea
merchant of China of those days, the
congou teas which he grew on his own
estates being especially renowned On tho
London market. Tho Napoleon of tho
trade of China died, aged 74, in 18 n,
aud was succeeded by his son, who died
last month. The magnificent gardens of
his residence In Canton were one of the
many sights of the city. He was always
pleased to show them and his mansion
to English visitors, and he never failed
to draw attention to tho presents which
his father and himself received from
successive English sovereigns in recog
nition of services rendered to British
subjects in Canton. The younger Howqua
was nearly 00 years of age at tho time of
his death.

HOW TO GET WELL
is a question of vital importance,
but it is equally important that you
use some harmless remedy;
many people completely wreck their health
by taking mercury and potash mixtures,
for pimples and blotches, or some other
trivial disease. S. S. S. is purely
vegetable containing no mercury
or poison of any kind. And is at the
same time an infallible cure for skin diseases.
