Powers, independent candidate for governor. Kev. Ferris has accepted a call to St. John's church, Omaha, and will begin his labors there Nov. 1st. His successor here has not yet been decided upon. The reverend gentleman's many friends will be sorry to see him leave, but wish his prosperity. Merchants should bo on the look-out for thieves. One of our dealers lost an implement last week, but heard of its wherealiouts, and just as he was alxiut to send the sheriff out, the man who had possession came in and settled for the thing he had pilfered. dipt. J. 15. David of the 7th Iowa Cavalry, who commanded a number of soldiers stationed in this city in 18tW '4, was in town Friday on his way west. Several of our older citizens remember him and some of them will not soon for get the injustice done them by him. Ila Anderson, suing by her next friend, her sister Tillie Anderson, has brought suit against Peter Cunningham, alleging $10,'MH) damages. It is a civil suit, the counterpart of the bastardy case, for which Cunningham is under bond'; of SI, 000 to appear in district court. Two men" have, on two successive nights, visited the premises of Nick Adamy. Sherman tvvp., the last time opening lire on Mr. Adamy, as ho ap proached them. A brace of good bull dogs and a couple of double-barrelled shot guns would be handy to have on the premises. Mr. and Mrs. John Klliott and Kev. Gtiswold were in attendance at the svnod at Kearney last week. While there a visit was made to the Reform school over which Hon. J. T. Mallalieii, (a former citien of Columbus), presides. Mr. Elliott saw the institution is one of which the state, may well be proud. Mis. Dr. Evans was thrown from her bnggv one dav last wek. while the buggy was being driven across a ditch. Friday, at Fremont, at the resi deuce or her staler Mrs. Lou Hover, Mrs. Filield departed this life, aged f."t years. Deceased was an old resident of Nebras ka, and for several years wjls a success ful teacher in the public schools of this city. She retired Thursday night feel ing perfectly well, and wan found dead in her bed Friday morning, the doctor giving it as his opinion that she must have been dead seven hours. John Cow a noted tough of Lincoln, who v as in jail there on a sentence to thirty days for the theft of a gold watch from Eva Enswoith, a member of the demimonde, broke jail at Lincoln and came here to see his "wife" who keeps the road house near the fair grounds. Officers Sateriee and Campbell caught him and he was taken to Lincoln, where, after his term of sentence, he will be re arrested on a charge of stealing hogs. Chief of Police Taylor, in answer to the query of a Journal- reporter as to the best remedy against thieves said: cheap telegraphic service, say a cent a word. ffa. ll Eaten ly CanuihaN? Cudney. the mis sionary, are fearful concerning his fate and hardlv dare breathe their suspicions as to what has become of him. Mr. Cudney was a well known local mission ary here of remarkable gifts. He was u mau of natural genius, hnely educated and remarkably handsome. Early in life he devoted Ins energies to the eleva tion of fallen and degenerate humanity. He made friends and admirers in all classes of society by his irresistable magnetism and never was known to use Ins abilities only for the ennobling of Ins fellow men. A year ago he decided to go to the South Sea islands and preaeii to the Cannibals there the doe trine of Christ he so dearly loved and served. Since then reports concerning his death have lieen set ntioat, and as no word has leen received from him since he left a ear ago, his friends are fear ful that the worst fate that can happen to a missionary among man-eating sav ages has befallen the talented Mr. Cudnev. Backus, Sup't of the Indian school at Genoa, was in the city Thurs day between trains. Thomas Manly of Genoa spent Sab bath in this city visiting his brother-in-law, Tom McTaggart. Sheriff Caldwell went to Garden Grove, Mo., Thursday to visit with friends and bring home his family. Mr. and Mrs. J. S. Murdock started Monday for California, where they ex pect to pass the winter. Miss Delilah Davis, who has been in Baltimore the past three weeks, expects to remain during the winter. J. B. Holmes of Blooniington, III., was in the city Friday, called here by the death of his brother-in-law, H. M. Waite. W. O. Pugsley, chairman of the county board of supervisors, came up Friday from Omaha, where he had marketed stock. R. S. Arthur and family have moved to Ellis, Neb. A whole-souled, good citizen, The Joounal- is sorry to see him go. Otto Pohl came up from Fremont Sun day to spend a few days with his parents. It seems very natural like to see Otto around. Mrs. H. B. Fanble who had leen on a visit with friends at Genoa, stopped in the city Saturday on her way home to David City. Mrs. Elizabeth Coolidge, mother of II. P., returned to Sioux City, la., Sat urday, after a three weeks' visit with her son and other relatives. Mrs. Pasch of Newman Grove was in tho city Friday on her way to Schuyler, called thither by the very serious illness of her father, Wm. Draper. Billy Murphy, telegraph editor on the State Journal of Lincoln, came up last week to attend the funeral of Wm. O'Brien's little child, returning Friday. Mrs. Mary Marmoy, of Columbus, and Mrs. George Spooner, of Sioux City, mother and sister respectively of Mrs. J. C. Martin, are here on a visit. -Clarks Chronicle. Mrs.T. II. Hogsett of Columbus, Ohio, has lieen visiting her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. W. W. Mannington and either friends. She started for her home Monday noon. Milt Siwiee and family, who have been here peveral weeks, start today for their home in Oklahoma. Mr. Hpoiee gives a very favorable account of that section of our Uncle Samuel's domain, as a fair and fertile land. Samuel McFarland (brother of Josiah) of Keokuk, la., is visiting with him this week. Josiah says that he hadn't seen him for twenty-nine years and thought ho was dead. Their nephew James, of Pittsburg, Pa., is also here. Farmer' ('lab. En. Joubsai.: Please announce in nevt issue that the Platte Farmers' Club wilj hold its next meeting at J. H. Reed's on tho last Friday in October, the 31st. The subjects are class legislation; winter feed and care of col4s; are we in danger of overproduction in horses?; besides current events, general questions, etc. The last meeting, which vac J-eld at Mr. Fobes's. was the best attended and one of the niopt interesting meetings we have had. Reporter. Fred Meedel was in town Wednes day with a large load of very large pota toes. He says that he raised 125 bushels on an acre of gsound.
