Tho Ear heard yesterday that the Union Pacific band excursion which will go to Columbus Saturday, August 13, will bo the biggest, thing of the season and will eclipse all previous excursions under the aim ""as of that organization. The band hv tpent its annual holiday at nearly every city withm 150 miles of Omaha, and the committee say that the cool, shady, grassy groves of Columbus furnish the most tempting place they have visited. It is thought that fully twenty carloads of pleasure seekers will attend this year, and tho train will run out in tv o sections. This is always the big event of the year, and a right royal time will be had. Omaha JiC2tibltcait. One of Walgraf Bros', dray teams while on the freight depot- platform Saturday evening at fi o'clock, heavily loaded with butter from the Columbus eieamer-, had a narrow escapo from total destruction. A freight train came rumbling in and started them on tho run; the driver endeavored to turn them into the store room of the depot but failed. They ran pell mell the length or the platform grazing the passing cars where the wagon was overturned, scat tering tho numerous firkins of butter right and left. Other than a few bruises received by the driver and a badly frightened team of horses, no serious damage was done. On a recent Sabbath. Fred. Matth ews and Gcorgo Turner, who are with Buffalo Bill's Wild West show, upon in vitation, spent a very pleasant day with the family of Henry G. The family aro ,all in good health, the two little girls, as remembered by the citi zens of this place have grown to be quite large and are very proficient musicians on the piano, two of which they have in use at their resilience. His team became frightened at the noise from a passing locomotive, got away from the driver, took a bee-iine fo$ Reynolds and Craig's barber shop. -turned short at the side walk, ran east on Twelfth street to the Hammond House and were going at full speed when one of the horses got into the water main ditch just completed where they were captured, without any ijc-riotis damage. Last week wo noted the seir-kiliing oi Willard Eltzroth of Crest on by a rope suspended from tho rafter of a bain; this week wo chronicle that of Lee Mer rill by a pistol ball ranging through the brain from the rear lo the forehead oer tho left eye. Leo had lived with his brother Jay on his farm six miles northwest of the city. Tor the past three years, coming here from Anchor, McLean county, HI. He was eighteen years of age, and up to two weeks ago seemed to enjoy good health. At that time, it is said, he was overcome with heat, and no other cause can be assigned for his temporary in sanity. Sunday he had been out hunting and playing ball, had had no trouble with anyone, had enjoyed himself, and. among other things showing al least no long premeditation of suicide, ho talked of attending a daneo in the neighborhood next Friday evening. About eleven o'clock he returned home; as he wjis quite a while at the barn, and as Mr. Merrill had a tricky mule, ho didn't know but Lee might have got hurt, and so called to him from tho house. Leo answered that ho would be in. in a minute, and shortly did come in and go up-stairs. ne made some stir in the room and, calling, "Well, good-bye. Jay and Eettie, I'm going," the next that was heard by the terrified brother and wife was the pistol shot with the fatal result. He had -written a note and left it on the stand in his bed-room, stating: '! am tired of living. Give what I've got to Forest. Give my lovo to Cornell and Sammy. Good-bye." Theso were his brothers living at homo in Illinois, with his father; besides Jay, his relatives here were his brother Forest, working for O. L. Baker, and his cousin. R. Ilrigham. Ho had &J00 in money and a pony, which he designed to give to Forest. Tho funeral took place yesterday evening, from the M. E. church. Uev. St. Clair oliiciating. Mlfll I'lvck 1 It'll.:.. Louis A. Mr. Frank Sholles has moved Ins granary. T.ixIG, from Mr. lienrieh's farm up to his own timber claim. By going a little round-about all the bridges weie avoided but a pretty steep up and down hill traveling had to be done. Every thing, however, went softly and nicely. Frank has gone to Omaha. Four or live men with their leams, etc. passed down Shell Creek from Holt county where, as they said, they had been starved out. They admired on: crops and Raid if they could have raised such crops up there they would not have left. They were bound for Arkan sas. Platte county is hard to beat. Mrs. Vnnarstelen fioiu Philadelphia. Pa., has been on a visit to her son Mr. Harry Y. She took a wonderful liking lo our country, but considered herself too old to change her residence. It was quite an undertaking for a lady or her age (4) to venture on a journey of 1 100 miles alone. . i . A. Platte Center. Ask that Friday night fishing party what they did with all their lish! Waggoner ,t Barnes doing the threshing with their steam thresher. We went lishmg the other day and in returning home passed by A. Mat his' line orchard, where the red-chcecked fruit hung in rich profusion. We think that fruit should be cultivated here much more than it is. It is true that Nebraska does not furnish tho most favorable place for growing fruit, owing to tie severity of the climate in winter, but we think by a little care and proper management, quite au industry in fruit could soon be cultivated here. Several parties in this neighborhood have set out large numbers of fruit trees and are deriving a great deal of benefit there from. Owing to the severity of the weather sis before stated, trees do not flourish so well here, but we think this effect can almost be counterbalanced by taking excellent care and providing for wintering them. Charles. It has been noticed for some time that, at different places through tho country patches of Canada thistles have made their appearance. These are a perfect pest in a pasture or meadow, and hard to exterminate when once widely spread. If they are cut down just as the blossoms are about to appear tho plants will die. Fanners who find these patches on their own or others land, can do no lietter work nqw than to give a short time to cutting them. A stitch in time saves nine. The Canada thistle is known by its having blossoms similar to other thistles and by growing in thick patches, shutting out everything else. WIND WRECKS. Sis: Seconds "Work of .-iTomado.3Iaiin!: Ziorso Buildings. In this region of country. Friday of last week was a day of pitiless heal ex ceedingly sultry, and none, used to the climate, were surprised when they heard of the terrific storm of wind at David I !it- i I,. nmtitt oa.iI jiT Vti.tl,. ...i? at six o'clock that evening'. It is des cribed as having been preceded by a black cloud of dust, and that the ter rific wind was accompanied by hail, which, in the country, destroyed a larga amount of crops, the damage to city and country being variously estimated at $100,000 to $150,000. Tho path of the storm was about a half mile wide and ten miles in extent. In the heart of tho town and about two miles northeast, tho greatest dam age was done. AVhero the storm struck with its full force, everything was de molished. It lasted, probably, only a few seconds, and yet in that lime there was fearful destruction of property, besides injury to persons, and one man buried in tho ruins of a building and killed L.
