given that the fol
lowing described lets

fered for sale for taxes
of 1884 at tke County
Treasurer's ofice in
the Court House ia
Platte Co., Neb., on
Monday, the 3d day of
November, A. D., 1885,
between the hours of
'9 o'clock in the fore,
noon and 4 o'clock In
the afternoon of the
same day, and that
- said sale will continue
from day t day until
all the tracts and par
cels of lands and lots
have been offered, the
purchasers paying the
amount of tax herein
set forth, and the in
eterest, penalty and
coats to be added.

PARTINGTON AT HOME.

B. P. Shillaber (Mrs. Partington) to a
-friend who was congratulating him up
on having that day reached the good
age of seventy.
Unless it should ba foreordained be
forehand in advance,1 ' playfully rejoined
his friend, "that he should surrira his
factories aad become idiomatic before
that time."
The genial humorist was seated in his
farorlte room, which in these laUryean
has confined him for months at a time.
But few of hs many callers would dream
f this fact The ever hearty welcome
whioh they receive and the absence of
any personal complaining certainly do
not bint, of the severe pain which is a
frequent visitor. Only the crutch in the
corner suggests it. There looked out
from the painting on the wall the ro
guish face of Ike. "the prodigal of vir
tue;" the very same Ike who caused
Mrs. Partington to wonder why he
"didn't get a medal, for certainly a
more meddlesome boy she never knew,"
although, at the same time, she dared
to hope that with "judicial training he
might yet become a useful membrane
of society." On the shelf below the
painting was Sidnejr Morse's fine
statuotte of the humorist. The writing
desk, whioh had done him faithful
service for fully t.venty-five years, stood
opposite.
Over the vr ns 1 !. on a book
shelf, were w.i .1 ! e culled his three
essentials a Urg.! Pokglot Bible,
which had an iut -resting family history,
a Shakspeare and a Webster' 1 Diction
ary. There was a twinkle in his eye
when he remarked that through these
he showed his loyalty to the "angular
Saxons." Upon being asked where his
own books were. he naively repleii that
he "kept them in another room out of
sight." Speaking of these, it is pleas
ant to know that the first copy of each
one of them ho inscribed to the one
who for forty-five years was a true and
loving helpmeet, whom death cla'mei
some two years since, leaving him
alone but for the bright, helpful pres
ence of an unmarried daughter, who
has now the sole 'chargo of his house,
and is a daily elixir whTch any man
might envy.
Unfortunately, Mr. Shillaber is not as
'rioh as Creosote" and never has been.
Ha has longed "to have a villain in the
country and become an amatory fanner
under the canister of heaven." But he
has surely illustrated, in his life and in
his works, a quality of mind which not
even Croesus' money could buy. that
'4t is better to speak paregorically of a
person than to be all the time flinging
epiUphs at him."
In the confinement which is now
more or less his he is over interested in
the outside world. His interest in poli
tics is as fresh as when he was a young
man, before he "inherited the gout
from his wife's ancestor" He is
rooted and grounded iu the principle ol
a true Democracy. The Boston Post,
which first introduced him as Mrs. Par
tington, is still a welcome daily visitor.
But in talking with him on political
matters no one can help thinking ol
poor Paul, the corporal of the Bloody
7th, "who was inclined to politics,
but wasn't a propergander nor an oily
arohist, nor an averitionist. nor a demi
god; all he wanted was an exercise of
of h's sufferings and the use of his elect
ive French eyes."
Mr. Shillaber's interest in his friends
is frequently shown in the apt impromp
tus which unexpectedly greet tfiem.
As an instance, with a copy of Brown
ing's "Agamemnon ami Dramatic
Idyls." which, one Christmas time, he
sent as a present, he wrote on the fly
leaf: "A Merry Christmas, I send with this,
Thoutfh It beems absurdity crowniua;
To wish for cdcbinatory bliss
Overthn works of Browning.
The many rhymes of his, which have
added pleasure to' festive occasions, are
growing fewer and fewer, and in hit
home in Chelsea his though ta turn
ohener than formerly to the unknown
country. As he says himself, ho is now

How a Frenchman Got Kven w!B'i aa In
pertluaat Stranger.
Among the frequenters of a well
known Parisian resUurant was a cer
tain methodical personage, who dined
there every day, and always at the same
table, which the proprietor, with a due
regard for so regular a customer, espe
cially reserved for him. Once, how
ever, by some mistake of the waiter, he
found on arriving his usual place
already occupied by a stranger; and,
inwardly fretting at the disappoint
ment, entered into conversation with
the mistress of the establishment, who
presided at the counter, and awaited
the intruder's departure as patiently as
he could. The latter seemed in' no
hurry, for, after consulting the bill of
fare, he ordered another dish and a
fre9h bottle of wine, seiug which the
habitue, who would rather have gone
without Irs dinner than taken any place
but his own. resolved at all hazards to
get r'.d of the unwelcome guest, and
addressing the dame du eomptoir in a
low tone, inquired if she knew who the
individual at h:s table was.
"Not in the least." she replied; "this
is the first t'me he has been here."
"And ought to be the last." he sig
nificantly remarked, "if you knew as
much as 1 do.
"Why, who is he?"
"The executioner of Versailles."
"Mon Dieu!" exclaimed the territiel
dame du comploir. aad calling her hus
band, imparted to him the information
she had just received.
"Make out his bill," he said, and
counter-order what he has asked for.
He must not stay here, or we shall lose
every customer we have."
Whereupon, armed with the docu
ment in question, he presently crossed
the room to where the stranger was sit
ting, and inquired if he were satisfied
with his dinner.
"Pretty well." was the answer, "hut
the service might be quicker. Why
don't they bring what I ordered?"
"Monsieur." replied the traiteur, as
suming an air of importance, "I am
compelled to say that your presence
here is undesirable; and that I must re
quest you to leave my house as soon aa
possible, and on no account to set foot
in it again."
"What on earth do you mean?" asked
his aston:shed gwc;t.
"You must he perfectly aware." con
tinued the other, "that your be'ng seen
here is most prejiidic al tome, and "
-Speak pla:nly, man!" impatiently
interrupted the stranger. "! insist on
being told who you imagine me to be."
"Parbleu! you know as well as I do.
The executioner of Versailles!"
"Ah! .nd pray who is your authority
for this?"
"That gentleman," replied the pro
prietor of the restaurant, pointing to
the habitue at the corner, who was be
ginning to feel uneasy as to the result
of his "joke."
"Indeed!" said the stranger, raising
his voice so as to be distinctly heard by
every one present; "that gentleman has
informed you that I am the executioner
of Versailles. Well, he ought to know;
for two years ago it was my painful duty
to brand him',r

Use of Gas.
With eleven teeth had I parted with
out the. aid of amesthetics. Uncondi
tionally I surrendered them to the
dentist, who was willing to receive them
for a consideration. A twelfth must go.
As I took the chair of torture, 1 re-
! marked that it was a four-footed molar
and wonld hurt.
'Take gas," suggested tha dentist.
"What is gas?"
"Nitrogen monoxide, the best anses
thetio known. It is harmless and serves
well."
'I'll Uke it; give me enough."
The dentist brought forth a rubber
bag, the wooden muzzle of which he
thrust into my mouth.
With a bound I sprang into the air. I
attempted to fasten my hold upon some
thing, but everything gave way even
giant elm came up by the roots. I real
ized that I had but" a few minutes to
live. All my fiiends I saw every one
were watching me. My deeds, good
and bad, filed past me. I will not say
which formed th'e longer procession. A
man to whom I had given a pewter
quarter asked me how I liked it, and.
said he knew that I would come to it.
Now I was going upward, and when
I bad reached a great height I swooped
down like a bird of prey and dashed
through a wall of solid masonry just
one hundred feet thick by actual meas
urement. A dozen times I soared aloft
and as manv times I sailed down. When
I descended all the stone fences, cob
bles, bowlders and trees ran to meet me.
I hit them all. Now I was ascending
again, but in a different manner. A
balloon, u.iles in circumference was
bearing me upward. 1 clung to its
lower part with my .teeth. My hands
were in my pockets, for the air wa9
chilly. Above me was the balloon car,
and ont of it leaned a man resembling
the dentist. In his hand he held an im
mense pair of tongs. He regarded me
with evident displeasure.
We were rising at a fearful rate of
speed so fast, indeed, that I could not
shut my eyes. The wind blew the lids
open and held them back. At last the
man in the car said: "Now I'll pull
that tooth; you must cling with your
nose while Ipull." I obeyed, knowing
that I was in his power. The tooth came
out, on tne ena oi tne tongs, and was
placed in the car. Soon after I heard a
tumuit in the 'car above. The dentist
-appeared and shook his clinched hand
at me and shouted: "Confound yourold
tooth! It is growing so fast that it will
crowd me out. Pretty fellow, you an,
to shed such a monstrous molar." I
thought this was very unkind. I had
not asked him to pull the tooth, and
how could I be responsible for its size?
Again the dentist appeared and cried
in great wrath: "1 shall throw it over
boardlook out!" It did not hit me.
I saw as it whizzed by that it was many
times larger than the Capitol building
at Washington. I hoped that none of
my friends were standing where it
would, fall upon the earth. We were
now near the sun and approaching
nearer at lightning speed. The dentist
sat on the edge of the car, dangled his
leg and smoked. He had the impudence
to ask me why I did not smoke. It was
so warm from proximity to the sun that
I decided to go no further. I relin
quished my hold and shouted: "Good
by, old jaw-breaker." Quick as
thought, insulted, indignant, the den
tist rushed for his tongs. "I'll pull
them all," he said, and as I fell the
tongs lengthened and gave chase, but
could not overtake me.
After falling all day and all night, I
came near the earth early in the morn
ing. As I flew downward a gilded
weather-cock on a church steeple
crowed. I considered this offensive, and
by some unknown agency arrested my
flight, and went back to the weather
cock and demanded to know what he
meant by it. He crowed the louder.
This was too great an insult. I flew at
him, when, presto, he began to crow
louder, and to grow larger. I was on
the earth now, fleeing from a monster
cock. The church and steeple were still
attached to him, but he had become so
much larger that they were no impedi
ment. I remonstrated with him, but
his only reply was a blow from thefoot
that held the church and steeple. He
was on the point of dancing a hornpipe
on my stomach, when I emerged into a
new world in time to hear the dentist
say: "There it is!" at the same time
holding up a tooth. "Did you know
when F pulled it?" "Yes, I saw you
and your tongs pulling, but I felt it not.
You were a great while about it. How
long have I been here?" The dentist
consulted his timepiece. "One minute
and twenty seconds." Every Other
Saturday.
Trying to Save the Property.
"In case of fire carry me out," is
painted in large yellow letters on a
cumbrous and valuable-looking chest in
a Chatham street shop. The shop keep
er, as if happily conscious of a great
achievement on his part, stood back of
the center of attraction smoking a full
grown Connecticut cigar. A seedy
looking piece of humanity came aim
lessly along the street and stopped to
gaze at the queer-looking letters on the
chest. Then, as if propelled forward
by some diabolical motive, he rushed in
the store and began to lift the chest with
all bis might.
"Git out there! Vat you want?" ex
citedly exclaimed the proprietor, rush
ing forward.
"Why. sir, Fs doin' jlst as that box
said. I seed this sign and that fire "
"What fire?"
Why, that tire there," and be pointed
to where the cigar of the excited man
which he had dropped in his harry, was
burning a hole in the carpet. With one
sump of his shoe it was extinguished.
But the tramp still lingered.
"Moses," again said the proprietor,
after glancing at the tramp and then at
his clerk, "give that feller one of them
cheap cigars the cheap ones, mind
and then put him out."
The tramp took the cigar and walked
out without any unnecessary helping,
and with a beaming smile upon his dirt

In her book on her husband, Mrs.
Custer says the General tamed a tiny
field mouse and kept it in a large, empty
inksUnd on his desk. It grew fond of
him. and .ran over his head and should
ers, and even through his hair. I had,
fortunately, to keep away from the desk
when the little creature was free, for it
was contented to consider that his do
main. The General, thinking at last
that it was cruel to detain the little
thing indoors, when it belonged by na
ture to the fields, took it out and left it
on the plains. The kindness was of no
earthly use. Like the oft-quoted pris
oner of the bastile, it was back again at
the step in no time, and preferred cap

that, since natural gas has coma to be
largely used as fuel in that city, the at
mosphere has become clearer than it has
been at any time for three-quarters of a
century, "the sharp outline of the river
