Onio and Iowa at their recent
elections gavo increased majorities
for the Uepublicans, routing the
democracy at almost every point in
those loyal states, tilling the hearts
of Republicans everywhere with
gratitude and joy.
A land meeting recently held at
Xavau, Ireland, was attended by
30,000 people. The city was decor
ated. The clergy and citizens came
out to wclcomo Parnell, with ban

Landlords."
News comes from Dubliu that
five hundred tenants of the Marquis
of Sligo and the Earl of Lucan, near
"Westport, county 3rayo, have sol

prices of alt kinds of agricultural

Let every Republican in l'lattc
county be at the polls on the 4th day
of November, bright and early, and
cast his vote, rolliug up a respecta
ble majority for the State and county
Republican ticket, and thereby, in
some sort, annex yourself to the
glorious republican" victories jut
achieved in Ohio aud Iowa.
The Republican camp-fires are
burning brightly all along the Hue

they have not forgotten '01 and T:
they are not disposed to forget the
spirit shown by the late confeder

probably show a more determined
front than 1SG0. Republicans of
Platte counly chould not be behind
their brethren elsewhere.

It is confidently expected that
every Republican in riatlc county
will do his duty in sn-tainiug and

not personally acquainted with them
you have been assured by the en

The persistent personal abuse
dished up by the Platte Valley
Democrat against John W. Early,
the Republican candidate for county
treasurer, indicate- that Johu's op
puuent on the Democratic side is
not making as good time in the race
as the Democrat desires, and there
fore must needs manulaclurc some
story to check John's speed in the
rare : and thus the Democrat charges
Mr. Early with being the '-originalor
of the Independent Democratic I
movement, and now i'wuhlics the
material aid. comfort and support
the principal mipportPts of that con
vention aro receiving, " w hen at the
same time the Democrat must have
known that the movement referred to
originated with several prominent
aud respectable citizens of Ihc city
and county, outside of any inllucuc'c
that Mr.Early could bring lo bear on
any one individual concerned in it,
aud eeitaiuJy a very unwise move
ment uu his part, as Mich a proceed
ing, ot ull others, would he best
calculated to defeat his own election.
Among nil the stories put into cir
culation una" published iu tho Dem
ocrat, wo aro pleased to know, that
not ouo of them charge him with
being incompetent to discharge the
duties of the office to which be as

Chaeles Schroeder, Esq., Colum
bus, Nebraska, Dear Sir: Yours of
9th received with two advertise
ments from the Journal or rather
one adv't of Mary E. Bechcr and an
editorial notiqp of a call for a meet
ing signed by 41 citizens for Octo
ber 11, at 2 o'clock.
I think you wrote us that Mrs.
Becher's husband had tho Osgood
patent and it is this that she claims
under. The Osgood patent is not
for a driven well, but for a peculiar
shaped point. Patent 58,953, Oct.
10, 7C6. Tho claim is "the combina
tion of the spiral wing or wings "h"
with tho shank B and tubing A op
erating substantially as and for the
purpose herein set forth."'
This patent cannot he used with
out infringing the Green patent, and
is not worth two cents if it was not
an infringement. This patent has
been set up with perhaps thirty oth
ers as a defense to our claim bill has
never been pressed but always
thrown out as having no connection
or bearing. It is simply for a tool
to bo used iu making wells, aud
don't pretend to bo for the well
itself. The patent is styled "a new
and useful improvement iu sinking
well tubing," and that tells the
whole story. If parties used
3Irs. Becher's patent in putting
driven wells, they must pay her for
using it as well as paying us, but
the chances are one hundred to one
that nobody used her patent. If
her husband used it every well he
put down is liable lo our royalty.
Tlnpao combinations are" neither
new nor formidable. Only three
have ever fought a case through,
aud each of the three were defeated
and paid up. Lots of others dis
banded and paid, some after spend
ing a few thousand dollars iu taking
testimony, but most of them before
getting that far.
When we get prepared with coun
sel iu Nebraska, shall straighten
them up, but'eannot attend to it just
now. Give all a chance to pay the
five dollars as directed, and after tho
time elapses all others will pay ten
dollars. People will not bo "such
fools as to light a patent that has
been sustained in three circuit and
the supreme court of tho District of
Columbia, and concerning which no
adverse decision has ever beeu giv
en. Please report and remit as per
agreement, and all in good time
your delinquent friends will receive
attention.
Very truly yours,
Wm. 1). Andrews & Buo.
Everybody must know that only
one party can have a patent on the
well itself. Wo have that patent
and you have the documents to
prove it.
