but when it is considered that banks

fourth place in tho race for United

Cleveland is repudiated by the present

without discovering his unfitness for the

For a long time it has beeu

Mr Brynus mind evolved a very
feeble and unworthy slnp at Christianity
when in his IndinnapollB speech of ac
coptauco ho said Tho command Go
ye into all tho world and preach the
gospel unto every living creature has
no gatliug gun attachment In tho
first plnco tho missionaries didnt go into
Chinn with gatliug guns and now that
they are there it Is doubtful if tho Son
of Man would require them to calmly
submit to the indignities of the murder
ous heathen directed ngaiust themselves
aud families without an effort nt self-
preservation and defonso in fact the
Old Testament scriptures contain many
commands from God directing his chil
dren to mnko war on the heathen in
habitants of the promised laud and
drive them out nnd it iB also recorded
that God himself assisted when the
Israelites were weak or inferior in num
bers There nre very fow church or
ganizations but that believe in the effi
cacy of missionary work and it is very
doubtful indeed if Mr Bryans slur at
them will win their enthusiastic suppoit
Another recent nssertiou to show tho
drift of democracy is from the Verdict
which sueeriugly says iu speaking of
tho outrages in China Tho greatest
mortality is among the missionnires of
the Presbyterian faith and winds up
with a slur at ono of the doctrines of
that religious denomination There are
those who claim to be christians who
may support Mr Bryan in one way Or
auother but what inducements they
will have for doing so havo not yet been
disclosed
Consent of the Governed
If memory serves aright Mr Tillman
of South Carolina posed before the dem
ocratic convention at Kansas City as a
friend of the weak aud oppressed With
muoh feeling he read the Declaration ot
Independence laying especialjjstress on
the consent of the governed
Whether he rend the following plank
from the platform mnkes little differ
ence He was there and endorsed the
sentimeut
We declare again that all govern
meuts instituted among men derive
their powers from the conseut of the
governed that auy government not
based upon the consent of the governed
is a tyranny and that to impose upon
any people a government of force is to
substitute the methods of imperialism
for those of a republic
No one took tho pains to look up his
post record He is a leader in the party
nnd therefore all right The brand
democrat iB blown in the bottle aud
It will pass even though full of incon
sistencies Therefore the attitude of
Mr Tillman to the negroes as evideuced
by the following quotation from one of
his speeches in the recent congress will
probably not be held against him
We took the government away We
stuffed the ballot boxes We shotthem
We are not ashamed of it With that
system force tissue ballots etc we
got tired ourselves So we called a
constitutional convention and we elim
uated as I havo said all of the
colored people whom wo could uuder
the fourteenth and fifteenth amend
ments
The recent action of tho democrats iu
South Carolina will not sound as a dis
cord in the democratio ears which have
beeu so accustomed to discorduut notes
that they fail to recognize harmony
But there are voters who admire somo
consistency and whose consciences nre
not seared They will profit by a show
ing of some democratic professions that
have the appearance of hypocricy
Some Standard Argument
Voter The McKiuley administra
tion has suited me very well There
have been good times plenty of money
plenty of work at good wages business
has been good and people generally pros
serous aud happy
Democratic Politician But look at
the conditions iu the Transvaal Cubn
tho Philippines Porto BicoOhlnn etc
Voter As I havent time to go to
nil of thoso ploces I am inclined to take
conditions ns thoy come before my per
sonal observation hero nt home Now
under Cleveland
Democratic Politician But my
dear sir dont yon know that imperial
Ism iB being forced oh this country aud
you will soon bo a pcOn Bubject under

Globo a paper of 1800 circulation
whoso editor is a republican and holdR a
position in his precinct In fact it is the
only republican paper in this couutry
worth noticing It Is working for Im
perialism and is certnln to eiiBlnvo you
Voter But tho republican paity
has been in control ISO or -10 years nnd
imperialism hns not yet
Domociatio Politician Then look
nt tho secret alliance with Englnnd
This country is owned by England Hns
a mortgage on it nud will foreclose nud
yon will be a penniless beggar Wo are
under Englands thumb
voter I tnought this couutry re
cently loaned England something like
00000000 and
Democratic Politician But look at
tho constitution That is to bo changed
to suit the republicans that instrument
produced by our forefathers And wo
are in secret nlliance with England
Voter It occurs to me thnt the
peoplos cousent will have to he obtnined
through tho legislatures to do that and
that no secret alliance can bo in force
except with the consent of the senate
Democratio Politician And the
Fourth of July is to pass awny Mr
Bryan Bays it will not bo observrd if
McKinley is re elected He also says
we aro to have imperialism aud a large
standing army
Voter But iu lbi Mr Bryan said
prices were ns certain to fall under the
gold standard as a stouo thrown into the
air He also
Democratic Politician But yon
will live to regret it if McKinley is
elected Look at conditions nil over the
country
Voter Yes they are very satisfactory
to me nnd I shall vote for Mr McKinley
Democrats Think IJryan Insincere
The leaders of the sound money demo
crats iu Omeha pre not to be won over to
the Bryan ticket by the declaration of
the Kansas City convention that anti
imperialism is the paramount issue
Interviews with a number of the leaders
brought out the fact that so called im
perialism is not for them even en im
portnut issue much less the para
mount question of thocampnign The
following are u few of the interviews
given nn Omaha reporter
Dr George L Miller when asked if he
cousidered anti imperialism the most im
portant issue of the campaign said
It is no issue at all There is but
oue issue iu this campaign and that
concerns the business interest the
pocket took issue While the people
aro threatened with another financial
pa uc aud general depression their
thoughts nre not going to be concen
trated on nuy cry of imperialism It is
folly to assert that a little war over in
the Philippiue islands is of more impor
tance to the people of the United States
tbau their individual and collective
interests at home Nothing like imper
ialism appenrs in the policy of any polit
cal party in this country and therefore
it is an impossible issue
Do you think thnt Bryau has gained
any strength since his Indianapolis
speech was asked
No responded Dr Miller On the
contrary I believe that speech has les
sened his strength as a candidate It
showed the insincerity of the man who
four years ngo asserted that we could
have no prosperity in this country as
long as we adhered to tho gold stundard
Bryau then promised to carry on the
fight against gold as a matter of prin
ciple mind you until voters in the
couutry would be ready to surrender to
the causo of 10 to 1 It was the oue aud
only great principle for which every
personal consideration should be sacri
ficed according to his expressions in
the former campaign Now observe the
readiness with which he abandons it
nfter its value as a vote producer is
goue Eight thousands words at I
apolis and scarcely a reference to the
cause for which he had promised to
sacrifice all else Bryau is shown to be
a mere preteuder aud as the people are
begiuuing to know him better they are
losing their confidence in him
Henry W Yates was the second sound
money democrat to be iuterviewed
Is imperialism the paramount
issue he was asked
As long as there is the remotest
possibility of destroying confidence by
ncitating the free silver question there
cau be no other paramount issue than
thatwhich relates to money Imper
ialism is a dream of Bryans I guess
What is your opiulon of Bryans
Indiaunpolis speech
It was a very elaborati defence of
the fundamental principles of this gov
ernment which has never been disputed
by any one of good sense Bryan is the
sort of a lay wer who might be expected
to plea his case after it had beeu do
cided by the court
When Dr George Tildeu another old
lino democrat was asked if he thought
imperialism was the paramouut issue
he promptly replied
Of course not
glren prominence in
Imperialism was
the Bryan plat-
form for tho purpofo of obscuring the
vital question of tho campaign which
is whether or not the silver question
ought to be revived
Do yon think doctor that Bryan
has a good chance of election
I dont thluk he will carry a stato
north of Mason and Dixons line with
tho possible exception of Nebraska
Colorado and Moutnnn Ho is not near
aB strong ns ho was four years ago and
ho wasnt so very strong then I dont
think Brynn has gained any gronnd
through his Indiaunpolis speech Ab
people reflect upon his utternuces nt
IndiannpoliB he will lose ground because
they will realize that the dangers spoken
of do not exist It Is Impossible for the
United States with its high order of
civilization to inflict any injury upou
tho Filipinos
Tho veteran Judge Wakely was not
disposed to tnlk of imperinlism It is a
waste of timo you know to discuss
things thnt are in tho air remarked
tho judge
Would you bo willing judged to pre
dict the result of the election
Anything that can bo said this far
in ndvauce of tho election would bo
largely conjecture As far as I have
been nble to gather I am led
to doubt Bryans ability to carry a
sufllclent number of states that ho lost
in 1800 to wiu this time He is likely
to carry Kentucky and Maryland may
bo considered doubtful but on the
other hnnd he 1b sure to lose some of
the states he enrried four years ago
What did you think of his Indian
apolis speech
It was built on air It conjured up
n purpose of the administration which
does not exist in fact
George E Pritchett another sound
money democrat wns brief and to the
point
Has Bryan gained anything from
his Indinunpolis speech wns asked of
Mr Pritchett
1 didnt read the speech I quit
paying attention to Bryans vaporings
some time ago
is imperialism an important issuer
I cant think it is I dout observe
any tendency toward imperialism by
any party or any faction in this
country The talk about it iB all clap
trap
Will Bryan be elected
He will bo snowed under so deep that
he will not appear again in the politics
of the nation and the democratic party
will have an opportunity to get back to
common spnbe nnd reason four years
from now
Warren Switzler former candidate
for the supreme court judge on the gold
democratic ticket said
It is beyoud the power of any polit
cal party to mako any paramount issue
by simply declaring it to be to The
people make the paramount isue iu
every campaign and this year the pro
tection of this prosperity seems to be the
only question ot importance before
them
Has Bryau gained anything by his
Indianapolis speech
Yes
What
