We understand warrants were issued
yesterday Before County Judge Bates for
the arrest of Leland Spaulding Perry
Law Gilt Wright George Madsen John
Kuhl CharleB Parks and Paul Karo
charging them with the crime of rape
upon Augusta Schultz the complainant
in the city of Norfolk on the night of
May 4 1899 The warrants will soon
be placed in the handB of Sheriff Losey
and the parties prosecuted will havo a
preliminary hearing before Judge Bates
at Madison as soon as they can be
found
Fred H Free and Burt Mapes havo
been retained as counsel by the plaintiff
and W M Robertson will appear in be
half of the defendants This action is a
great relief to the public in this commu
nity There is a general feeling thnt
the matter which has been so widely
discussed and which has so greatly agi
tated the city should be brought to trial
and decided on its merits If the parties
arraigned aro guilty of this awful crime
then they should suffer tho full penalty
of the law If they are not it is due
them that they have tho benefit of tho
law and the evidence and be cleared bv
legal process from tho injustice of such
a charge

tho board of secretaries of tho stato
board or transportation In reply thoro
to permit mo to say that whou this mat
ter was first brought to my attention 1
requested tho loard to tako the matter
up and investigate it thoroughly and
grant such relief as might lio in their
power Since then 1 havo made ono or
two inquiries and lenrned that thoy had
taken tho matter in hand and wero to
work upon it Supposing that this
affair had been disposed of satisfactorily
to all parties I gavo it no further con
sideration as it is tho board of secre
taries which at tends to all such matters

its namo to tho work of the secretaries
I regret very much to learn from your
lotter that tho secretaries had not been
diligent as you viow it in tho mattor
