One of the most humorous statements
now going the rounds of the press is
that Admiral Dewey is coming homo to

They begin to make demands not when

Foundations in Peril
For nearly a week past this commun
ity has been stirred to its very depths by
rovolatioua of such a character that they
havo brought the blush of shamo to the
cheek nnd kindled tho fires of wrath
and indignation in every truo breast
against tho participants of a deed so vile
as to bo nameless
The News was prompt to spoakof tho
ugly rumors afloat laBt week and has
nothing now more than it had at the
time whon it first alluded to tho thomo
of palliation or oxcubo to offor in behalf
of thoso who were charged with the
shameful offense
It is said that there is no law under
which prosocutious can bo mado against
tho parties concerned If it is true then
there is certainly something very seri
ously wrong with tho statutes of Ne
braska Thoro is a common ground
upon whioh nil men who havo any re
gard for thoso committed to their care
can stand That place tho people of
Norfolk havo reached Thoy may differ
as to many other things but thoy are
agreed as ono man that such debauohcry
and lust as 1b charged in this case is not
to bo condoned or further tolerated
Somo ono has said that The hearth
stone is tho foundation stone of tho re
public A community can afford loss
of property it may bo obliged to meet
somo awful visitation of death or disas
ter which shall bring sadness nnd sor
row All tlieso mav have their compen
sations but there can bo none for
the witheriug blighting influence
of thoso who lost to all scubo of personal
honor or manly impulses would under
mino and destroy not only life but
character Tho charges mado in this
case are too loathsome to contemplate
Tlie parties to tnem should be given a
fair and full opportunity to offer uuy
testimony they may have to offer but
tho fuct that they have left tho town is
in itself presumptive evidence of their
guilt The News has uo desire to pre
judge any case It believes that in a time
like this candor good sense and a judi
cial temper should prevail but never
theless the spirit of the people which
demands that justice bo meted
out and that a bau be placed
upon those who outrage public decency
is a credit to tho manhood and
hood of Norfolk and an honor to a poo
plo whoso sous and daughtors are their
dearest possessions However much or
howover little truth there may be in the
allegations made a legal prosecution in
some form ought to bo possible It
would do more than anything else can
do to purify the moral atmosphere It
would make our streets safe places for
pedestrians it would put a stop to tho
boastings of lewd fellows of the baser
sort ovor their escapades jit would show
to all the world that Norfolk as n law
abiding city insists that such damnablo
beastliness is neither to bo counte
nanced nor condoued

Nob Dear friend No doubt by this

I havo just simply ucglcoted to write

had tho timo and ability to put into
writing ono half thnt wo havo soon and

would bo an interesting story but I con
fess my inability to do tho srbjoct jus
tico so yon must bo content with tho
short sketch that I may bo able to give
you of our lato unpleasantness with
tho insurgents
On tho ovonlng of March 24 tho second
division of which tho First Nebraska is
a part took up position on north line
whon at 5 it0 n m flvo regimonts of us
formed into skirmish lino At the
sound of tho buglo we moved forward
but had not gono far when we encount
ered tho enemys outpost which oponod
flro upon us and which waB rat mod by
our troops with a good will and in short
ordor wo had thom headed for Malolos
But not until thoy had 1 1 of our
mont wounded Fortunately for my
company uono of us woro hit Tho
fighting continued cloar into thoir so-
called capital which we reached after
six days of awful hard tramping We
drovo them from trench to trench they
holding thoir positions only until we
got in rango with our Springflolds
when wo would give thom a few volley
then somo rapid flro and they were off
Thoro was one time though that they
became brave and made a charge on the
First Nebraska We turned the tables
on thom killing about 20 and wounding
many more We had seven wounded
in this attack among which was my
captain Jens being shot through the
bone of tho right arm by a Mnusor ball
causing a painful but not dangerous
wound Ho will be back with our com
pany soon
Tho last death in my company was
my bunk mato Sergeant Arthur H
Vickors He was wounded in battle
tho day before Malolos fell being shot
in tho loft thigh He lived three days
I saw him fall but could not speak nor
get to him at that moment for we were
under a heavy Mauser fire and I was in
charge of tho second platoon and ad
vancing by rushes ns favornblo oppor
tunities offered and you know by ex
perience that every man is busy at such
a time
The troops have been doing but little
lately except holding the ground since
taking Malolos thereby giving the boys
a much needed rest We have no
idea now what the next move will be
The volunteers seem to be doing all the
fighting and we have had our fill of it
during tho last month I am well and
enclose photograph of myself Please
say hollo for me to my friends in Nor
folk and elsewhere if yon meet them
I hopo to hear from you soon nnd per
haps to see yon in the near future
Very truly your friend

Tho pupils of Mr Koenigsteiu at first

and fully demonstrated that most effic

that piano thumping is no longer con

Before it is at all possiblo for him to

before musical omotional feeling can bo
adequately oxpressod there must bo a
sympathetic communication between the
musicians brain and finger and herein

Women Should Know It
Many women suffer untold agony and
misery becauso tho nature of their dis
easo is not correctly understood They
have been led to believe that womb
troublo or female weakness of somo sort
is responsible for tho many ills that be
sot womankind
Neuralgia nervousness headache
puffy or dark circles under tho eyes
rhumatism a dragging pain or dull nche
in tho back weakness or bearing down
sensntion profuse or scanty supply of
urine with Btrong odor frequent desire
to paBS it with scalding or burning sen
fcation sediment in it after standing in
bottlo or common glaBs for 24 hours are
sigUB of kidney and bladder troublo
The above symptoms are often attrib
uted by tho patient herself or by her
physicinn to female weaknesss or womb
trouble Hence so many fail to obtain
relief because thoy ore treating not the
dseaso itself but a reflection of tho pri
mary cause which is kidney trouble
In fuct women as well as mon are
made miserable with kidney and bladder
trouble and both need the same remedy
